How do I find a knife?
#1
I'm looking to get a knife but I don't want to buy one only to find another knife that I would have liked better. Since I'm new to the knife world can any of you pros recommend a good knife comparison website that lists many knives? Searching Gerber, CRKT, or any other specific maker website would be very tedious. Thanks in advance.

Take a ride down to the Country Knife Store on Route 340 so you can handle what you see. Buying a knife online without handling it, IMO, isn't a good idea. You want something that you can hold comfortably.

What do you want one for? What do you plan on doing with it? How much do you want to spend? What's your upper price limit? Fixed or folder?

Wal-Mart $14 in the camping section, a sheathed Coleman fixed blade, w/ 4 1/2" blade. I bought my second one today. One stays in the car, the other I carry on my belt when I need a work knife. Works like a champ, inexpensive, holds an edge... Just a suggestion, don't over think it. Find the one that world for your needs.

There are a lot of options, obviously. Set your criteria and stick to it. It's the most basic tool you can have, but that doesn't mean it has to be basic. The CRKT is pretty darned good at its price point, with a lot of important options (liner lock folders, blade shapes, ergonomics, etc).

In my opinion, set a price point and pick something that stands out to you. They're all going to work.

I'm looking for a fixed blade between 4-7 inches, partially serrated. I doubt ill use it much I've gone 35 years without using a knife aside from the occasional multi tool knife. Upper limit is $100.00

From the online looking Ive done I've liked the crkt ultima, Gerber prodigy, a few Kabars and a few Ontarios. My main concern is that there is a company I haven't heard of that makes what I want and I won't find their knife.

Thanks for the link Streaker.

I think you will find that your carry knife will fit your own personal preference and no one else. I like many here have a box full of knives that they picked up over the years. Yet they still carry the one knife that works.

By the way after you have accumulated fifteen twenty knives you start calling them a collection.

This is the Gideon by Blackhawk. $100, available in tanto or drop point, but no serrations stock.

I added the serrations for a few bucks more later so now it looks like this:

It's a very thick/stout blade and very comfortable to handle. I really like it.

Kabar Becker. They are beasts. Pick your favorite:

Whatever you get, I recommend carbon steel over stainless.

Check Amazon (well known brands only, not the China-made junk)....I scored one for my hubby at half retail price because it was a design from like 2011 that they no longer made anymore. $130 knife for $50, brand new.
