How long can a portable generator run continuously?
#1
This is my first time using the generator. How long do you guys run yours before giving it a break? How long of a break do you give it?

I was thinking of shutting it down at bed time then getting up in a few hours to start it up to run the fridge for a bit then shut it down till morning.

I have a Generac GP 6500. I cant find the manual for it.

You do know its cold outside, right? Smile

Look on line for the manual since you should change the oils after x hours of running. Otherwise they can run and run. Mine is bigger but ran for 11 days last year. It's really just a engine.

I typically just pay attention to the hour based maintenance schedule.

I ran my el-cheapo Harbor Freight 3200 Watter for 4 days straight. I've used it for many shorter stints since then. Total I have about 210 hours on it. Like Justin said. Just follow the maint schedule. Since you don't have the manual you can probably look one up on line. They're pretty generic.
Ammunition, it's the new lead bullion. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

The above spec sheets suggests a run time of 10 hours at 50%

I would rest it tonight. There really isn't much reason to run it while sleeping. IIRC you posted you are burning wood for heat, so save the gas. Heck it's cold enough to put most of the short term perishables outside in a cooler. I wouldn't spend the money to run it when nature can help out.

it's a machine .....never saw a tired machine that needed a rest Shrug.

that runtime noted is how long it will run on a tank of fuel.
in other words it will run 10 hours at 50% load before refueling is needed

as long as it has proper ventilation and the correct oil level shutting off for refueling and oil check is all i've ever done and 7-8 years ago my honda ran for almost 2 weeks with just shutting it off 1 time for 20 minutes to change the oil
It's the "BILL OF RIGHTS" not the bill of "needs"

I shut it down for the night. Didn't really need it. I did the 30hrs on the meter oil change this afternoon and put some M1 10w30 in it. I'm good for another 100hrs before an oil change is needed.

It's nice being prepared!

The majority of generator failures are from lack of scheduled maintenance. Mine requires an oil change every 20 hrs. So not only do I need enough fuel for an extended period of time, but also enough oil to keep it running properly. Whole-house generators are designed to run for extended periods. I have seen friends and customers generators throw rods because they just add fuel and the gens don't have an oil shut-down sensor.
