This has been said over and over but it looks like the New York Times is sending the message home that background checks do happen. A lot, and happened in all of these mass shooting cases.

I wouldn't have a problem with the idea of having severe mental disturbances being federally recorded and added to a background check.

They would have to make strict guidelines, but if you swagger around making threats or if you are on fifteen different psychiatric drugs and you cannot hold a job or you get discharged or fired for mental issues, and you have to go to a special mental school...then that should somehow be noted on a background check.

Most of these mass killings were, I think, "First time" crimes, right? So the only way to prevent them is twofold:

1. Somehow note severe mental issues on background checks.

2. Make sure everyone in the community has relatively easy access to guns and carry permits for self defense.

Unfortunately, then you have this:
Political abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union

Quote:There was systematic political abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union, based on the interpretation of political opposition or dissent as a psychiatric problem. It was called "psychopathological mechanisms" of dissent.

Quote:Political dissidents were usually charged under Articles 70 (agitation and propaganda against the Soviet state) and 190-1 (dissemination of false fabrications defaming the Soviet state and social system) of the RSFSR Criminal Code. Forensic psychiatrists were asked to examine offenders whose mental state was considered abnormal by the investigating officers.

And that's when the fun really starts...

How about punishments and liability lawsuits for a mental health professional not filing the proper paperwork that allows these nutbags to pass background checks?

That's true....there is that.....political or social dissidents being accused of mental instability.

The best answer is really that everyone should arm themselves Switzerland style, I guess. We really coddle people too much in America which gives rise to so many nut jobs.

Rabbit trail:
I had a friend in Nova Scotia (notice I used past tense) who didn't like that I was a gun owner. She said in Canada nobody owns guns and nobody needs to because it is safe. Anyone know the stats on gun crime in Canada, and if they are lower than here.....why? She seemed to think I was a violent person because I believe in gun rights. Needless to say, our friendship didn't really last. I find Canadians often disapprove of Americans....until they need surgery ASAP.......

Is that stuff already supposed to show up on background checks? I didn't know that.

That would be a big liability issue for any practicing psychiatrist/psychologist. I think it would lead to an abundance or caution (read CYA) to avoid that liability on the part of mental health care providers. As a result, many more folks would end up undeservedly prohibited. Additionally it could have the unintended consequence of people not seeking help because they are afraid of losing their 2A rights.
Ammunition, it's the new lead bullion. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

Address the criminals on Capitol Hill, before trying to make criminals of People.

I've said it before. The U.S. Government: Citizenizing its criminals and criminalizing its citizens.

Admit nothing.  Deny everything. Demand proof.
If we lie to the government, it's a crime. If the government lies to the people, it's called politics.
