I'm so proud of my in laws.

Little bit of background. In laws lived in town years ago, and did up until very recently.

They were ok with guns, but didn't spend much time around. But when your only daughter starts bringing around one of those "nuts", things rub off on you.

Over the past few years, we have discussed my bug out ideas. Locations, land, and different preps.

About a year, maybe a year and a half ago, my in laws decided to buy a new house. Out in the boonies. Way out in the boonies, with a pretty good plot of land. And a fully stocked pond. And a woodshop, and a few other odds and ends.

Every so often, we go out to lunch together. This time, they brought me a nice treat. Quite a bit of honey, from their own personal hives. Now, I'm not one for getting over anxious, but this is the best, mother fucking, honey. Honestly. Fresh from the comb, just filtered essentially. Even getting a handful of beeswax for casting.

So at lunch the other day, my father in law asks me about solar power.

We go over the costs, the benefits, and what all needs to be done. I get home, pull out some of my books on solar, and get the ready so we can put some thoughts to paper and I suddenly realize something.

My distrust of the system has converted someone else, and these someone's are already getting the ". . . you know, I could build a small cabin out there. . in case you know we need to stay for an extended time."

They get raw milk (better be careful, have someone knocking on my door knowing I drink raw milk) from some folks down the road, same with fresh beef.

I am so very proud. And some day, when the world ends, just look for the smiling guy, with his face covered in honey. I'll keep the light on for you. Smile

Seriously though, sounds fairly awesome. And a little worrisome. Is this getting mainstream because it's a fad? Or is the direction we're all headed getting that obvious to everyone?

I think that many people are doing it as a fad. These are the people that have a few extra cans of soup in the cuboard and are going around saying they are "preppers".

That being said, my in laws . . it was a long hard journey. Showing them different things, news that doesn't exactly make it on CNN, crime statistics, and things like that.

They already liked the idea of getting back to nature. Less impact, etc and so forth. But now they are putting money in gold and silver. And are taking it very seriously. They have seen alot growing up (I'm 27, and I married their youngest), and they actually show concern with the way the country is going. And not just from a foreign stand point either.

Congrats on getting them on board. One suggestion: If it's possible try to supplement the electric generation by solar with wind as well. There's quite a few farms around this are that I've been seeing solar and windmills popping up.

Also, check into Solar panels that heat water. I have one in my garage that someone gave me. It's a 4x8 panel and was meant to be used in pairs. you pump antifreeze through it, sun heats it and then the hot anti-freeze is pumped through your hot water heater.

I will have to look into those streaker. One thing I did think of was a solar hot water heater. A friend's house has water pipes that push hot water through the floors. Not the most efficient way to heat a house, but it is something I have thought of.

It is AWESOME when folks start to see the light. Sounds like not a fad for them. Seems that they truely have the desire to get back to basics a bit.

GRATS to you and good for them

Oh YES it is!!! That in floor radiant heat is the most efficient way to heat a house....just depends on how efficient you are at heating it....Google Geo-Source heat pumps Smile

It's also VERY comfortable and even heat, since it heats you not the air.....

even if it is a fad i think it is a great fad. much better than skinny jeans.

seriously though, i love to see people become self sufficient. theres no better way to say "ive had enough with the system" than dropping out of it or greatly reducing the amount of $ you feed it.

It would be great if they made a hotwater/electric solar panel, combine the two devices into one. Don't know if they do, but it might be something to look into.
