I'm going to build an AR and I think I like the longer handguards. Just asking those that know more than me.

It's out of stock, for one.

And I've heard bad things about having a rifle-length gas system on a 16" barrel. It ends up being under-gassed, and will only run on hot loads unless you drill the gas port larger than spec (perhaps they do this from the factory, I don't know). There are other companies that offer dissy uppers that actually have carbine and mid-length gas systems, but retain the long handguards and sight radius.

Have you checked out the PSA stuff?

How about BCM?

As the satisfied owner of one of these;

For the price of a low profile gasblock, you can put 15" handguards/rails on it if you like, and get the same effect, out of a MUCH better upper!

I've heard similiar. I've heard mid length works good though.

I'm curious. Why the longer handguards? Why handguards at all?

Don't need the lower parts. I have those on the way. PSA kit with MOE stock, grip and trigger guard.

For the money, I'd look at one of the "premium" uppers from PSA... unless someone comes along complaining about how they got exactly what they ordered from them and didn't know it. Plan B is to scrape together a bit more money and get something from BCM.

Also: In my opinion, the dissipators (including the "mock" units) look fantastic... but just move the weight of the FSB further out toward the end of the barrel where you don't want it.

Right, but they give you a longer sight radius and longer handguards. It's a compromise.

That's why I went with a midlength... built to the Goldilocks standard. Traded a bit of sight radius for a bit of balance.
