January Range Trip - Trio of AR15s
#1
January 15, 2016

Yup. It was 50 degrees!

There may be some boring pcs, but figured it's always neat to see where other people shoot, so I snapped a few random shots as I drove in/out of the club.

Gate to keep you riff raff types out. :p
Proximity card reader opens it when you wave your key card near the sensor. When I joined the club, most of it was accessible with just a heavy chain blocking the main rifle and pistol ranges. That was a pain in the ass.

Driving past the skeet/trap (? I forget which is which) area on my way to the upper part of the club grounds where there are multiple smaller shooting bays to choose from.

Up we go!

"Steel Paradise" bay. Ping! Ping! Ping! Ping!

That's the main shooting bay we use for all the pafoa group shoots. There's a long, narrow bay to the left of the pavilion and a wide open bay off camera on the right as well as a bunch more around the bend past this range. Lots and lots of places to shoot "privately" here.

I'll take this one today.

That's another bay below the one I used and there are two more below that as well as a double bay across from them.

A few target stands were already set up...

Since I was just function testing the short range will do just fine. I used the stand with teh cardboard as well as the one furthest back. (no target on it in this pic)

Cont...

The guns.
Closest to furthest:
- My new, unfired 5.56 build. (PSA upper/Del-Ton lower)
- My original 5.56. (RRA upper/Anvil Arms "pafoa" lower)
I've just added a full set of Magpul furniture to it. It's that Matrix hydrodipped set that AIM had dirt cheap for $69 or $79/set. The color is "Bounty Hunter".
- My 22LR AR (Chiappa 22 upper/New Frontier polymer lower)

I used to swap this 22 upper out and put it on my Anvil Arms lower but finally had enough parts to put together a lower for it so I could have a dedicated 22AR15. I used all the normal parts even though a 22 doesn't need a buffer/spring - that way it could be used with a 5.56 upper in a pinch.

I wasn't very impressed with the fit of the lower. The Chiappa upper is a perfect fit on my standard lower, but the poly New Frontier lower needed to have the top edge (where the buffer tube goes) filed down about 1/8" before I could get the upper down in enough to get the pins in. I worried I would end up with a useless lower, but it functioned just fine.

Black Dog Machine mags - work great in the 22. I left the 50 rd drum at home.

For years I just used an ARMS 40L BUIS for a rear sight, but picked up a Colt takeoff carry handle for it. Looks better and is more secure now.
The Matrix custom patterned Magpul set consisted of a 30 rd PMAG, stock (all are MOE), grip, enhanced trigger guard, fore end, and vertical grip, which replaced the basic black furniture it came with.

Cont...

Oh yeah, always wear proper attire when shooting!

I shot the 22 first. The optic hasn't been zeroed in yet. I just rapid fired it and it hit where I put the crosshairs at this short distance. Gotta go back another day and see how it shoots at distance.

I was able to get a pic of the crosshairs. It has 4 different reticles to choose from.

OK, the newly assembled 22 works. Next up is the newly assembled 5.56...

I brought 5 (I guess 4 actually) types of mags to try. Magpul, Troy, D&H USGI w/Magpul follower, and OKay USGI with orig green follower. (literally a USGI mag)
all but one were initially loaded with remanufactured brass FMJ with teh USGi mag being loaded with Wolf steel hollow point ammo. I also had a few boxes of American Eagle 223 along with me.

Let's see what happens...

(CLICK!)

First round (reload) did not fire. I dropped the mag, ejected the round, and looked at it - no mark on the primer.
I placed the round back in the mag and tried again - same result. I then took one of the American Eagle rounds and inserted it in the mag on top of the reloads,
and tried again. BANG!... BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!...
I never had another problem with any of the mags or ammo.

Oh yeah, I lubed it up good with Weapon Shield. Cool

Sorry, no target pics. I was just shooting to make sure it runs OK and this one also has an optic (Primary Arms micro red dot) that isn't zeroed in yet.

I put a few through the original carbine too - wanted to see how I liked the Magpul furniture.
Not bad. I can't hold the fore grip - it just feels awkward. It works well enough as a "stop" though.

Out of time and out of ammo!

Time to leave!

Rental/meeting hall across from ball field near club entrance.

Exiting to the main road...

Cool view out over the valley...

Stupid forum only allows 20 pics and I had 40.

Then I forgot that when you make a post soon after a previous one, it merges them.

Wanted to break it up.

Oh well. Just trying to post something other than a discussion about robot building. Tongue

Nice! I haven't been up there for years! Brings back old memories!!

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Since I no longer have a 4WD I can't get to my range until spring thaw, but what do you expect when it only costs $10 a year...

The small piece of property I own is just too far away for a couple hour range trip so...

Must be a rear treat having a paved road.
Smile

Heh. The only paved portion is the entrance up to the gate and a short section on that steep hill that used to get REALLY bad.

It's getting pretty rough again. when I first joined (2007ish) it was DIRT and filled with deep, muddy ruts from the gas well company trucks that were in and out setting up wells. There was a big stink because they were destroying the road and were supposed to "restore" it when finished.
It took a while, but crushed stone was finally put down and it remained fairly smooth until not long ago.
Can get a car up there, but I take the truck anyway.

The real treat is having a club this size so close and having such a variety of shooting bays to choose from aside from the basic pistol and rifle range. (300 yards)

No goofy, restrictive rules either. (unless you count "no bumpfiring and no FA without board approval")
