Quote:Sheriff aims to hold classes for owners of gun permits

More than 31,000 Lancaster County residents own permits to carry concealed weapons.

Some of them, however, might not even know how to handle a gun or care for it.

As concealed-carry permits continue to sell here at a record pace, Sheriff Mark Reese has decided to make sure owners know what to do with them.

"We have a lot of people getting permits to carry concealed weapons," he said this week. "Some don't even own a firearm or will buy one for the first time.

"There's always a concern for their safety."

Reese and a few of his deputies are holding gun-safety classes for first-time permit owners and anyone else interested in a four-hour lesson.

Is anyone going to the class to just ask questions?

I just PA politics, this wasn't posted. Checked the lounge and it wasn't posted. Hopefully I didn't miss it.

Hopefully the deputies that are conducting the class actually have some personality, and not that no-neck asshole that works the guard station at times.

Once again, this/we are NOT the problem. Their time would be better served rounding up the criminal element and lobbying to stop the plea bargains business.

He's a regular commenter there. Whenever there's an article about firearms, he's there to spew his ignorance.

I replied to his comment but it's now awaiting moderation. I miss the old comment system.

The Columbia County Sheriff is going to be taking part in two handgun beginner courses at my club in the coming months, from what I gather it is going to be along the same lines. It seems to be geared toward new handgun owners who have either recently obtained or are looking to obtain their LTCF. I have no idea who the other instructors will be, or the legal accuracy of the material that will be covered, but I have volunteered to help out during the hands-on/range portion so I'm hoping I can get enough insight to form an opinion.

I'm all for it as long as it stays true to the law and citizens are not being tricked into thinking it is mandatory, and also as long as the course material is accurate.

That might be worth it to go, I'd like to see the training center. Plus it might be fun to see if they give any wrong information about laws.

But then, it might not be worth $40 for that fun.

Cost: Tuition for the course is $40 cash or money order made payable to "Lancaster County Sheriff"
