Federal health officials say they are investigating the accidental shipment of live anthrax bacteria to labs in nine states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that it's investigating the accidental shipments.

No one's been sickened by the bacteria, which can cause potentially deadly illness although it's easily treated with antibiotics if caught soon enough.

"CDC is investigating the possible inadvertent transfer of a select agent from the U. S. Department of Defense (DOD) to labs in nine states. At this time we do not suspect any risk to the general public," CDC said in a statement sent to NBC News.

"At this time we do not suspect any risk to the general public."

Department of Defense spokesman Col. Steven H. Warren told NBC News the shipments were mistakenly sent out from the U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.

Shit happens. Just today, I read on the NRC event reports that a facility that wasn't licensed to receive radioactive material was somehow sent a bunch of I-131 that ended up contaminating the place and exposing the workers.

Do the workers get any compensation or do they have legal grounds to sue?

Yep. People make stupid mistakes all the time. They screw up no matter what safeguards are in place.

Imagine the stuff we never hear about . . . . . .

I don't understand how that happens, I heard of something like this happening where someone got ahold of a medical source in Mexico and contaminated a large section of a town a while back. Most materials even for radiological pharmacology have to be shipped in a special container inside another container like a russian doll, covered in warning labels.

Pro-tip: If you run across a box that looks like this or this, and you have no idea what's inside and the box is really really heavy, you probably don't want to go messing with its contents....

Generally without any warning label when you get the russian doll style packaging going on without any warning labels, it's probably worth asking around if you don't know before opening that last seal lol. Seriously, would any of you open a package like that above by mistake?
