Quote:He allegedly walked into the elementary school carrying a 2x4 labeled 'high-powered rifle.'

The incident occurred at midmorning on Wednesday at the school in Strasburg that carries the same name as the one in Connecticut where a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children last Friday.

I think he was trying to make a point, that the school is insecure. I was just in my kid's school yesterday and noticed that their surveillance cameras that hadn't been working for quite some time are suddenly working.

I agree 100%, unfortunately for him, I doubt they will understand the lesson.

No, we're saying that if, after the past week's events, left the front door open for anyone to come in, then they're idiots. That's probably what the guy was trying to prove.

My kid's school all the exterior doors are locked, except for the front door that allows you into the foyer. From there you need to be buzzed into the office, and if you need access to the school you do it through the office.

Granted that isn't ideal, because if someone really wanted to do something bad, there are ways, which I will not post. But it's better than leaving the doors unlocked and allow people to come in unchallenged.

I've been thinking about this. What is going to keep someone (a crazed parent going thru a divorce) from going into the school. I know at our school. I walk up and hit a buzzer, They ask my name. I say, "Randy to pick up Katie." And I'm buzzed into the school. I am in the school halls, walk down to the office unescorted.

How do you stop someone from getting in????

Only real way that I see would be to establish a "waiting area." It would not have access to the schools main halls. You would go, and sign in. Show your ID to identify yourself, so they can make sure your a legal guardian and allowed to pick up the kid. They will send the kid out to you.

You would at no time has access to the inside of the school as long as the kids were in there. I know... school shows, chorus, band.... It isn't full proof, but would deter a lot without them going to arming teachers (even though I still think they should do this).

Of course then you have the risk of things going on behind closed, locked doors that parents will never find out about, once they no longer have free access to their children.

Indoctrination...searches...whatever....

I guess its really a no-win situation.

The best answer is armed security guards or school personnel. Maybe an armed security guard could escort a visitor to the classroom or something...but I don't think parents should be restricted from any portion of the school. You never want kids in an area where parents are prohibited.

I don't think we're talking about that, but rather better checked to get in.
