Man injured when gun accidentally discharges
#1
Here's one to keep track of: http://www.wgal.com/news/susquehanna-val...index.html

Quote:A 39-year-old Harrisburg man was injured Thursday when a sawed-off shotgun he was carrying accidentally discharged, according to police

~snip~

Investigators said the victim told them he was carrying the gun wrapped in a jacket when it went off.

I hope he has the appropriate tax stamp for that shotgun. I'm going to try to keep track of this to see if charges are filed. He should get federal charges if the shotgun was illegally modified, right?

Unless of course mr/ms media reporter is taking the liberty of calling it a sawed off shotgun because it was described as being compact enough to fit into a jacket.

I'm still waiting nervously for one of my guns to just go off accidentally....
The law? The law is a human institution...

Agreed. There's a strong possibilty it was a pistol grip shotgun. Hollywood and video games refer to them as sawed off shotguns. Hell, I ran into people here in PA who didn't even know they were legal. Rolleyes

It would be a federal crime, and also a PA state crime if it was not registered. Sawed-off shotguns in PA are considered prohibited offensive weapons if they are not ATF registered.

There are many possibilities here. Could have been a mossberg cruiser, illegal sawed off shotgun, an AK47, or a nerf gun.

Can't a "sawed off" shotgun still be perfectly legal (no nfa stuff) if it still meets overall length?

If the barrel length is at least 18 inches and the overall length at least 26 inches then no tax stamp is required, as I understand it.

This is correct. You can in fact saw off your shotgun without getting a tax stamp, so long as you don't cut it down to less than the required 18" barrel and 26" overall length.
