Mandatory Black Box in Cars
#1
A new regulation is being promulgated by the Federal Dept. of Transportation requiring the installation of an "Event Data Recorder" in all "light vehicles" after Sept 2014.

So while black boxes do exist in some cars on an experimental basis now it could soon be a requirement.

If you are interested, the Public Comment period on this proposed regulation is open until Feb 11, 2013. Interested persons, as individuals or as representatives of interested groups may make comment on the proposed rule, either in opposition or support.

To do so go to http://www.regulations.gov and search for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards: Event Data Recorders
Document ID NHTSA-2012-0177-0001

This is inevitable. So is the eventual placement of network/traffic monitoring equipment which passes data--on you--to the feds at all ISPs.

As I said before as long as parts are available I can keep an pre-2014 non black boxed car on the road. Even if they sit in a garage till I want to go play at least Ill know Ill have them.

It's not experimental. And they've been in most US made vehicles since the mid 90s. Chances are you've been driving around with one and didn't even know it. I put this same link and quote up on another thread last week, but here it is again as I think this is more relevant.

Quote:Last month, the federal government proposed that all new passenger vehicles be equipped with the devices. But 96% of new cars already have them, as do at least 150 million older vehicles. American makers, led by GM and Ford, have been putting them in cars since the mid-1990s.

There's a common misconception that these "black boxes" are separate modules mounted somewhere under the dash or hood. But they're inside your car's computer. So it's not like you can remove it easily either. The only reason it's such a big unit of a plane is so it survives the impact of a crash.

plan on the switch with the new higher MPG cars and the resulting loss of gasoline tax revenue to the gooberment that you will be paying a per-mile driven tax
It's the "BILL OF RIGHTS" not the bill of "needs"

How about some feedback on whether or not you went to regulations.gov and filed a comment. If you did was the information given in the original post helpful in finding the right document to comment on?
