Mental Health Issues Put 34,500 on New York’s No-Guns List

A newly created database of New Yorkers deemed too mentally unstable to carry firearms has grown to roughly 34,500 names, a previously undisclosed figure that has raised concerns among some mental health advocates that too many people have been categorized as dangerous.

The database, established in the aftermath of the mass shooting in 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and maintained by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, is the result of the Safe Act. It is an expansive package of gun control measures pushed through by the administration of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The law, better known for its ban on assault weapons, compels licensed mental health professionals in New York to report to the authorities any patient “likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others.” http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/19/nyregi....html?_r=1

Theres a whole lot of people who need more treatment and less access to firearms, but the law is so murky it is as dangerous to liberty as anything I can imagine.

Mental health has always been the "common sense" approach to stripping gun rights. It's going to get to the point where a traffic ticket means you are reckless and therefore can't own guns.

It sounds like you don't respect authority and want to go your own way. A problem getting along with others makes you a danger to yourself and others.

No guns for you.

Think about all the people who are borderline stable and own firearms but are now scared away from treatment because they don't want to end up on "the list". There's probably a lot of Veterans who have been through some bad shit who are thinking that very thing right now.

Now you're just creating more problems than you're solving.

It's funny how they tried to push the ODD thing a while back. No one had really heard of it so they figured it was the best bet for the masses. Oppositional defiant disorder is basically just shitty parenting (and a big dose of reactive attachment disorder) manifesting itself into antisocial, and later criminal behavior. But now, according to gov't sponsored psychiatry (not to be confused with psychology) anyone who opposes any law written for the "greater good" is an extremist with ODD. Very sad how real psychology is being twisted into a targeting system for a fearful, criminal gov't.

There is a number of states that REQUIRE Mental Health Professionals to report anyone who's a threat to themselves or others to the Police and that includes Pennsylvania. You can find a full explanation, list of states and reference laws here: http://www.ncsl.org/research/health/ment...-warn.aspx

But all that being said, the warning should produce a temporary hold for evaluation and ultimate adjudication if justified!
