More college kids being taught to hate themselves...
#1
The number of insane liberalism run amok stories coming out of Texas of all places lately are alarming. Basically A professor in TX wanted students to identify where they had unknowingly oppressed other people, simply by being born white and continuing to exist...

Here is a sampling from the worksheet:

Quote:The worksheet included statements like: 'I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed,' 'If a traffic cop pulls me over or if the IRS audits my tax return, I can be sure I haven't been singled out because of my race,' and 'I can turn on the television or open the front page of the paper and see people of my race being well represented.'

I particularly like the IRS one after the whole Lois Lerner deal. I'm just going to take a wild stab in the dark here and state that the majority of the people the IRS single out for government rape by the state are rich white dudes who are worth taking to court. The time when free internet learning takes the place of college cannot come fast enough.

I'm pretty sure that the last two times that I was pulled over, that I was let off with a warning because;

a) I'm white.
or
b) I drive a bad ass car.
or
c) All of the above.

Either way, I'm OK with it. Like Louie CK said, being white is awesome. Why deny it? I'm certainly not going to hate myself for it.

I was just talking to a black friend about this racism crap last night. He said, well, let me show you.

"White Washed". He's black, currently serving his country in the Navy, and now a part of security team that work as guards at a military brig.

The goal of this "White Privlege" bullshit is to create the perception that if for example you get passed over for a promotion at work for say a person of another race or gender who perhaps is less skilled or qualified than you should be okay with that because "you and you ancestors had their shot and now it's someone else's turn". It is simply another attempt to create a sort of self-imposed affirmative action by leveraging the pervasive white guilt after too many people started to figure out the regular old fashioned plain affirmative action is inherently racist and bullshit. This is a new means to the same end. What ever happened to the best man for the job? Good luck getting a job as a fireman in a big city with all your so-called "privilege".

Let's assume you guys are right though (which I disagree with) and white privilege is a real thing. Is white privilege not earned then? When you're at the ATM at 1AM or you are the owner of a retail store. It is a simple fact that statistically the black male is more likely to steal, cause a problem, or assault you going by crime statistics alone normalized for population. Saying this on TV would get you lynched but it's true when all other things are equal knowing nothing else about the person in question beyond their gender or race. During the OJ case did whites set fire to their neighborhoods and turn over police cars? No. Have whites been participating in the violent flash mobs that we've had in PA in recent years? No. In that case is it really "privlege" or simply self preservation and common sense at work? How are you supposed to create a "color-blind" society by obsessing over skin color on the opposite side now?

If you are willing to buy this load of progressive BS are you also opposed to the TSA shaking down the people most likely to be a threat over groping your grandmother? It is the exact same theory at work in both cases.

I'm not sure what the actual harm is in that assignment. To expose or heighten awareness of "white privilege"? Yeah, so what? Are all those white kids going to wake up tomorrow with black skin and magically become ghetto crawlers?

Is this assignment going to take away their "white privilege"? No. It's a stupid ass class assignment, given by some progressive educator. Fill out the damn paper, get the grade, and move on. Go back to the dorm and laugh about it over a joint or a beer.

I've had plenty of dopey assignments in college. BFD.

I agree with Justin. I don't feel guilty, and never will. I see no need to apologize for being white. If it carries "perks", so be it. There are plenty of black doctors and lawyers who earn a lot more money than I do. Good for them. God bless them.
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.

What value does this add to a college education beyond indoctrination that it needs to be part of the curriculum?

IMHO, anyone who does not periodically re-evaluate their beliefs, challenge them to see why they still put stock in them, or examine an aspect of their life they never think to look at is emotionally and intellectually stunted.

Geez Emoticon, for someone so critical of those who are 'brainwashed' by religion, I'm stunned that you're so hesitant to consider points of view beyond those you argue so dogmatically Wink

You're conflating paying for an education and unwanted indoctrination. Most of these kinds of classes where they do this shit are REQUIRED now. I talked to a geoscience intern over the summer who was complaining they needed a "race studies" course before they could finish their geoscience degree. I oppose this the same as if a state university were to require a mandatory bible study class to graduate. It provides zero value to 99% of people for whom it is required coursework. If you want to do bible study on campus there are plenty of clubs where you can do that that you don't have to pay for. If you want to be indoctrinated into believing the white man is evil you are more than welcome to join that club.

I agree that schools and universities are becoming huge indoctrination stations of the federal government.

They teach you the point of view they expect you to have, and if you buck it, you will end up regretting it.

In university, facts should be presented as facts, and opinions as opinions. We shouldn't be turning out social robots.

Schools are free to make determinations as to what is required to complete their degree program, be they "race studies" classes, Bible studies, Islamic studies, how to remove a hamster from your anus without making the news studies, or any other classes the college says you have to take before you get the degree you willingly go to them to get.

Provided, of course, they meet the requirements for the accreditation bodies in which they (and every other school in that body) are required to meet. Lest we end up with diploma mills.

And for that matter, 99% of college classes--period--provide zero value to the people for whom it is required if you go strictly by what they will be doing when they graduate. Which is why colleges & universities have a stringent "THESE handful of courses are required for your major, but THOSE need to compromise the rest as filler."

I'm wondering if your intern doesn't have to take a "race studies" class specifically, they have to take a humanities or some other class out of the general education requirements. Or if his is an Arts degree vs Science. Princeton, for instance, offers it as an Arts degree, and BA degrees have different requirements than a BS.

I'm (finally) finishing up my degree and "race studies" wasn't a requirement for the regional accrediting body. But mine is a BS, not a BA. A BA generally has more 'filler' and the requirements tend to be broader. I recall when I was at BU I was in a BA program, and it was loaded with 'filler' of the humanities ilk.

But emoticon, you're taking the word of an intern as gospel???? C'mon man, they should be fetching you coffee or washing your car, not talking to you about the struggles they have in academia Wink
