US intel: More indications than ever Russia could invade Ukraine
Published March 27, 2014

New U.S. intelligence assessments say there are more indications than ever that Russia could invade eastern Ukraine, as congressional lawmakers reacted with alarm to Vladimir Putin's rapidly expanding military buildup along the border.

"The thinking in the U.S. government is that the likelihood of a major Russian incursion into Ukraine has increased," a senior U.S. official told Fox News.

The new thinking is based mostly off analysis of public information, such as heightened rhetoric from Putin and his claims that Russian-speaking people in Ukraine face "brutality." He is building a public case for more military action, according to senior U.S. officials.

Also significant is the large buildup of Russian forces along the border with Ukraine.

Trust me everyone will let Putin have Ukraine before it comes even remotely close to a world war.

Russia is doing exactly the same thing Germany did. Now others will see our leadership is incompetent and may decide to make a move.Example China, N. Korea. It could be history repeating itself. You are foolish if you are not concerned about this.

We wait, ready with sanctions so severe that Putin will only chuckle this time instead of laughing in our faces.

Be warned, Russia - we have harsh words and stern looks, and we ain't afraid to use them.
So, what do you all propose that we do about it?

By the way, I'm taking bets against the first and third posts.

Das, your second post is quite a stretch. Care to lay out your train of thought?

I haven't exactly been following the politics of eastern Europe, so forgive me if I ask stupid questions. 1) Does Ukraine want to be an independent country, or does only parts of Ukraine want to remain seperate from Russia? 2) I just want to confirm, Ukraine is not a member of NATO, correct?

If Ukraine wants to be part of Russia, then let them. If only a portion of Ukraine wants to be part of Russia, then let them join Russia and the rest remain a seperate country. (Situation #1) If Ukraine was part of NATO or if we have a treaty with them to defend them if attacked/invade, and they don't want to be part of Russia, then we should put troops there. I don't like getting involved in other countries' politics, but I'm the type of person where if I give somebody my word, then I keep it.

Take situation #1 again. If only part of Ukraine wants to join Russia and the rest want to remain free, then we should put troops in the part that wants to remain free.

If we don't have any treaties or agreements with them to protect them and Russia wants to take them over, then I say let them.

If we have a treaty or agreement to protect them, but the country wants to be part of Russia, then let them join Russia.

On a different note, I think, with the government's approval, Americans should be able to form "volunteer groups" and go over there to protect the Ukrainians. Before we were involved in WWII, we had American pilots helping the British and Chinese.

We do have an agreement with Ukraine. We got them to give up their nukes they had when the Soviet Union broke in agreement that help then if needed with defense. This is MiddleFingers post in the Major News Tread. Quote:The forgotten treaty which could drag the US and UK into WAR with Russia if Putin's troops intervene in Ukraine

The agreement sees signatories promise to protect Ukraine's borders

It was signed by Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid
Kuchma in 1994

Ukrainian parliament has now reached out directly to all the countries who signed the treaty

Putin currently has 150,000 troops on Ukraine's borders and it is reported some have crossed into the country

President Obama says he is 'deeply concerned' by the news

The US and Britain have both made 'crisis calls' to President Putin to warn him to respect territorial boundaries
