Mossberg Plinkster
#1
My girls have been wanting a rifle for awhile. We were at Walmart today, so I decided to check out their selection. Each of them had different opinions on what they wanted; one wanted an AR, one wanted a lever action, and one wanted a pink Crickett.

I'd done some reading, so I decided (I got the money, I pick the guns) to get a Mossberg Plinkster. It's a good all around rifle, for target shooting and small game hunting, for new shooters.

I just wanted know if anyone here had one, and had any tips for aftermarket stuff, care tips, etcetera. I have a line on ammo for it, so once the weather breaks, I'm gonna have these kids shooting all day long.

It would be good for small game hunting in states where semi-auto rifles are legal for small game hunting, not in Pennsylvania.

Oh, yeah. Crap. Oh, well. Hahahahaha. Target shooting it is, then. Of course, when the zed apocalypse happens, no one's gonna care about PA hunting regs, anyway.

Very good point. When that happens reliability, ammo availability and ease of use will be paramount.

I have one.

You may have seen my DIY "stone finish" spray paint thread "over there".

The previous owner added the rail.

It's a pretty decent rifle for the money. For years you could only get 10 rd mags, but recently Mossberg started selling 25 rd mags.
I don't have any pics handy, but I did get one of them. They look like this...

If you look for one, don't get this one - it's for the crappy Mossberg "AR15" and doesn't work with the 702 Plinkster...

I've had the best luck with teh Federal bulk 555 rd pack hollow points that Wmart used to carry. I haven't seen Fed bulk in a year though.
With Winchester, I'd get a dud in every mag or two.

Aside from maybe running a patch down the barrel, I don't think I've cleaned it in about 5 years.

So I'm at my local outfitter, browsing through some cammo jackets and I find one I like. They have several in my size but I can't decide on a color.

Woodland...
Desert...
Urban...
Empty Mag's Driveway...

Needless to say, he's never gonna see me coming. Ninja
Ammunition, it's the new lead bullion. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

I bought a pre-owned Plinkster several years ago when I was introducing my grandchildren to shooting. Never a bobble with it, though it hasn't been shot as often as my 10-22. The grandkids prefer the 10-22.

I came across a 25 round magazine for the Plinkster and snapped it up. The magazine was defective, would not take anymore than 20 rounds. Returned it to Mossberg for a replacement magazine. The new mag will take 25 rounds. I don't know if it works properly or not, have not had the Plinkster to the range in quite a spell. From what I have read recently, the 25 round magazines are a crapshoot in functionality, unless modified.

I dug the Plinkster out one day earlier this week after reading some reviews. I had forgotten I cannibalized the scope for something else. I need to rectify that. Anyway, I realized how much I did like the Plinkster, appreciated the light weight, the easy handling. My arthritis liked it, anyhow.

Watch a video on disassembly and re-assembly before you take it apart, it may save a bit of aggravation.

Enjoy.

Edit to add: There is a "Pre-Owned Unfired" "No Box" one in Newark listed for $200. I think it is a consignment. Twice the price (almost) of a new one.

I finally got a chance to take the rifle out last Saturday, with my oldest girl, and my friend Bruce. Put two types of ammo through it, CCI Velicitors and subsonics. I put a few rounds through it, then after taking her aside and making her repeat the Foour Rules, loaded it, handed it over to her, and let her try.

The smile on her face was priceless. "DIE, ZOMBIE SCUM!" she hollered, putting round after round downrange. It took her about twenty rounds to get in the magic circle; as her confidence increased, so did her accuracy.

Then I gave her a Walther P22. She didn't do as well, but I told her not to worry, nobody shoots pistols that well their first time out. I even let her shoot one round from an XDM 9mm; she was surprised at how soft the recoil was, even though I helped her hold it. She went back to the Plinkster, until she exhausted all the ammo.

We drove to Mickey Dee's afterwards, for a celebretory Shamrock shake. Now she's talking about competing next year; there's a junior competition held locally every year for girls in my area.

Good stuff.

Good stuff indeed! Congrats on the new shooter and her enthusiasm! Now you get to try to keep up your pile of .22. Confused
