My Marlin 25N Project
Last week I got hold of a neglected Marlin 25N that stood in the back of a closet for years. I decided to give it a makeover.

This is the first pic of it that I saw.

After I got it I was able to inspect it closely and take more shots.
That is a spot of white paint on the bolt handle. I gave the bore a good scrubbing after which, it shined like a mirror with no obvious defects. The exposed parts of the barrel and action have lost most of the finish and one spot near the front sight it looks like it was scrubbed. Just a few minor rust spots with no pitting.

The stock is solid with only a minor nick on the forend. The entire stock appears to have been varnished at some time in its life.

Sanded clean and smooth.

Refinished in Red Mahogany and sealed with clear satin spar urethane.
Rust and grime removed from metal with 000 steel wool.

After more polishing with steel wool, I gave it a few coats of Outers Gun Blue and mounted an old 4X scope on it.

I have a magazine on the way from Numrich and hope to range test it soon.

Beautiful. Nice work!

You wouldn't be able to run as many people over with that car if it didn't drive as far. It should only have a 10 gallon fuel tank.
A copy of the manual's attached if you need it.

I have two of these, under the Glenfield label (identical except for a less pretty birch stock).

A couple of hints/kinks:

You probably already know that the most common designation for this particular rifle is as Marlin 80. When looking for parts and accessories, look for Marlin 80 stuff.

Both Marlin and John Masen supply new magazines for these rifles. The Marlin ones are just slightly different in geometry from the originals, leading to a problem where sometimes one of the new ones stick in the rifle. You push the release on the mag, and it won't come out. Don't panic. First, take loose the base-plate and see if the mag will drop.

Or, just remove the action from the stock, which you're going to have to do to truly fix the problem anyway. It'll come right out. Now, very SLIGHTLY bend the magazine retainer hook, and I do mean slightly, until ejections with the new magazines (and any old ones) become reliable. That's all there is to it.

The John Masen magazines seem to work just like the old ones.

Now, as to the trigger. Virtually everyone with one of these rifles does the "el cheapo trigger job." Just replace the trigger spring with a spring removed from a PaperMate pen. Naturally, be sure you bang on it a few times to make sure that you're not going to have any unwanted discharges. Doing this gives you a 2-3# trigger for the cost of a fifty-cent pen.

Love the look of the vintage scope on the rifle.

With CCI SV, you'll shoot cloverleafs all day at 25 yards, and sub-dime-sized groups at 50. They even tolerate real shit ammo well.

Thanks for the compliments. It is my first restoration job.

The scope is older than the rifle; a Bushnell Sportview circa 1980. The gun was made in 1989.

Oh wow. Just saw this.
Cleaned up nice!

I'm going to be looking for a Marlin 25 when I get some spending money.
That was my first rifle and I want to get one for the memories it brings.
