My Sexy Marlin Model 9 Carbine (Camp 9)
#1
I finally got my hands on my first Marlin model 9 - commonly known as the "Camp 9".
I say "first" because like lever guns and AK47s, I don't think I can have just one of these! Marlin also produced a camp 45, so that would be a nice addition as well.

The seller informed me that he had replaced some springs/parts and that it needed a buffer (original buffers are made of an inferior material that turns brittle with age - aftermarket buffers are available for around $10), but it works.
I still need to order a buffer. I figured I'd wait until I had it in my hands and could take it apart to see if it needed anything else before I placed my order.

The only thing that disappoints me is the holes that were drilled in the underside of the front end of the stock. I have no idea why it was done - perhaps a bipod?
There are several scratches in the wood and a few in the barrel. It looks like someone tried to touch up the barrel at one point.
So long as it functions properly, that's all that matters to me. I was looking for a shooter. If I want a show piece, I can always buy another one in better shape.

It came with a 12 rd Marlin mag and a "high cap" mag of unknown manufacture. I don't even know how many it holds yet.

Aside from the cosmetic defects mentioned, it appears to be missing a hood for the front sight. (No matter, I don't care for them anyway)
The rest of it is nice. Everything is solid and the "plastic" magwell/trigger guard is in perfect condition.

For those unfamiliar with this no-longer-produced, little gem, here is some additional info:
Produced: 1985-1999
Weight: 6¾ pounds
Length: 35½"
Barrel length: 16½"
Caliber: 9mm & 45ACP
Action: Direct blowback semi automatic
Safety: "Garand style" integrated in front of trigger guard
Sights: Fixed, drilled and tapped for scope mounts
Stock: Walnut-finished Maine Birch
Capacity: Magazines were produced in a variety of sizes with 12 rds being most common.
The camp 9 also accepts S&W 59 series double stack magazines and feeds hollow point ammunition, or FMJ.
Camp 45 carbines accept standard, or extended 1911 magazines.

Why do you people always have to go out and show me new things that I NEED.

If they made a 9mm or .45 Ruger Mini 14, then I would have to make that my next purchase. Yes, I know they have the PC9 and PC40, but I like the looks of the mini 14 better.

HAHA! I know what you mean. Wink

I've wanted one of these for years, but sort of put it in the back of my mind.
I've done the Hi-Point carbine thing. (barf)
I've considered the better alternatives like the Kel-Tec that accepts Glock mags and while I haven't written that option off, I'm just not as attracted to "black guns" - I like wood and steel.

I wanted a carbine in 9mm and remembered the Marlin and Ruger PC9 and began looking. I had a few leads on Marlins and one lead on a Ruger. The Ruger was more money, so I went with the Marlin - for now. (still want a PC9)

This carbine isn't as compact as some of the currently produced 9mms, but it FEELS like a real rifle when you hold it and trust me, it's rock solid.
I've read multiple articles over the last few weeks and apparently it shoots defensive, hollow point ammo without issue, so that is a plus.

Time to start buying igh cap mags for it!

Your assault weapon has been forwarded to the Odministration for banning/confiscation.

That's nice!
I may also have a lead on a Winchester pump .22 for you. It's one of those 'friend of a friend' deals. I'll track it down and get the particulars.

Its got a face only its Daddy would love. Wink I too have a few like that and they always end up being my favorites.

Gonna fix the wood or leave as is?

I can see where all the nicks dings and scratches came from. Just tossing it around on those stones.

Nice gun.

I've had my eyes on the Sub 2000 for a little bit to possibly go in my get home bag. What stops me and will ultimately keep me from executing the plan is my bag stays in the car 24/7 and I cannot bring myself to leave a firearm in the car like that. The bad reviews it gets don't really help things either.
