My take on the Toomey cave-in
#1
Here's my analysis take it as you will:

I hope by now everyone has taken the opputunity to read the amendments to S649 and now relize that the whole play was a smoke screen to get the Assault Weapons Ban and Magazine Capacity restrictions before the Senate without those issues being blasted and killed by filibuster.

There was no other way to do it. If the AWB and Mag reistrictions would have hit the Senate as straight up bills they would have been filibustered immediately and the filibusters would have stuck. This way they are attached as amendments to a Bill both sides agreed to and they shall not be voted on separately nor will they be filibustered. And they'll only need a simple majority to pass, not the 60 votes needed for cloture.

So Toomey became a "useful idiot" for Reid and Feinstein and provided the smoke-screen needed to bring Feinstein's AWB to the floor without a fight.

Now the only way this can be killed is to kill the entire thing! So start pounding Toomey, make him see the errors of his ways and force him to stand against his own creation because the DemcRats have poisoned it!

Need proof? The amendmants are all dated April 11, the same day as the cloture vote! Reid had this planned from the beginning!

Anything is possible, of course, but I don't don't think a bill with those amendments would pass a floor vote in the senate and it would definitely be DOA once it got to the house.

I think the real danger here, is in Toom-timer's willingness to compromise on what is essentially a benign 2A bill, when the next Sandy Hook happens, it will have effectively softened the resistance for legislation that will actually materially infringe on 2A rights. In this respect, yes, Toom-timer is indeed a useful idiot.

IF background checks for online classifieds and gun shows results in national reciprocity, and that is the WORST of it, I'll acquiesce.

^ Count me in too. However, that sounds too good to be true to result from this gun control campaign.

Umm, No. Amendments are voted up or down. They will propose an amendment or three, they will fail and then they will go ahead and vote for the background checks. If Reid or many other Dems thought there was any chance in hell of the amendments passing they would not have allowed them. They are basically tossing Feinstein & Co. along with the Prez a bone by letting them at least vote on it.

Again, the AWB and Mag Limits are dead. Enhanced background checks will be passed.

Give a liberal gun grabber an inch, they'll take a mile. You don't compromise with big government socialist progressives. Do not sacrifice one freedom (private transfers of firearms between law-abiding citizens) to gain another (national reciprocity). Stand firm on the former we have now and peacefully protest to attain the latter.

Ever post about wanting to sell/buy a long gun online? Well, under this law you would then have to to a FtF transfer at an FFL... this includes WAY more than gunbroker, etc.

I realize this.

And as it stands now, unless it's someone I know or they give me a copy of their LTCF, I won't sell to someone online.

Call me crazy, but I don't want to have the cops knock on my door at 2am because a rifle I sold to someone was just used in a random shooting.

You know how the media is, Zimmerman was simply defending himself from some thug but you saw how that got spun into being Obama's long lost puppy eyed boy.

Granted, it is common sense to have evidence the person is not prohibited and to have some sort of private paper trail. However, I don't think it should be compulsive, nor do I think it should be required to go to an FFL/NCIS check, thereby opening the door to a de facto firearm registration. look to NY to see what will happen then.

I'm not 100% sure I hate the idea of background checks outside of family members, to be honest, but I loath the idea of firearm registration in any capacity.
