Need advice on choosing steel targets
#1
Getting some railroad ties soon to do some landscaping around the compound and I'm planning on using some to set up some hanging steel targets for my pistol range. I've settled on 3/8" AR 500 steel so that it will handle all the pistol abuse I can throw at it and I want to hang between 3 and 5, round targets.

My question is this. If this is setup to be shot between 15 and 30 yards, what diameter plate should I get?

2.5", 4", 5"?

Bigger?

I haven't had the chance to shoot a lot of steel so does any one here have some experience in what size plates they like to shoot?

Should I get a variety of sizes?

What say you PA2A steel shooters?

The round plates used in Steel Challenge are 10 and 12 inch diameter, if that helps any.

Cool, thanks. I bet they ring louder than the smaller plates but I figure the smaller plates force you to be more accurate.

I may just order a few different sizes just to mix it up. Like a 12", a 6" and maybe 4" hangers. I kinda like the fixed rectangular plates too. They don't seem to be all that crazy expensive overall.

Those huge gongs are cool but I'm not looking to set up a long range rifle target just yet.

The rectangular and IDPA cuts are nice for combat practice. Although I have hung round gongs behind VTAC cardboard targets (Head and chest) just to spice things up a bit.

Old firehose is great for hanging them.

5 round hanging plates on their way. I picked all 1/2" instead of 3/8". It's blemished steel, not blasted, making it cheaper than the thinner stuff. One 12" round, two 8" round and two 4" round. I plan to hang the bigger one in the middle with the 8s beside it and the 4s on the ends. I found a promo code for 20% this order too so I didn't spend too much.
