Need Rear Sight for .22LR AR-15 Upper
#1
After several years of absolutely ZERO firearm related purchases I started thinking about getting an AR in .22 cal., or perhaps a GSG5 if the price was right.
I had recently seen both at around the $300 mark and it had the gears turning. I mentioned it online and someone sent me a PM letting me know he had a NIB .22 upper for sale. I bought it.

It's a flat top, so I need a sight for it. In an effort to try to keep the cost of a sight within reason, I was considering a Magpul MBUS - they cost more than I thought they would though. I thought it would be around $30, but they seem to be $50. (rear sight only)

I was looking online and found a SET - front and back - for around $25. WTF? I then discovered that THESE were the inexpensive line made for airsoft. Hmmm... would that work OK on a .22? I don't see why not.

Then I started thinking about carry handles...
But WHICH one? There are so many I don't know where to begin!

THEN I ran across another option I was unaware of - A.R.M.S 71L It's similar in construction/cost to the Magpul MBUS, but it's aperture also has a notch in the top. It's almost identical to the metal construction A.R.M.S 40L BUIS that I have on my .223 AR15.
This may make more sense, as it would essentially be something I'm already used to.
I found a set (front and rear) for $59 which is a great price as far as I can tell.

Thoughts???

Hell, if anyone has something laying around they want to sell, let me know. I'm not locked into anything here, I'm just trying to get a rear sight so I can finally get to the range and SHOOT something I can AFFORD!

I WOULD like to get an inexpensive red dot, so that was my reasoning behind a BUIS as opposed to a carry handle, but I said the same about my .223 AR and several years later, all it has for sights is the factory front ad the ARMS BUIS in the rear.

I have the Magpul front and rear on my AR. Wouldn't trade them for any other brand. The airsoft ones should work ok on a .22 but you may want to shoot an email to Magpul. They'd be able to tell you for certain.

I have the MBUS on my 15-22 (front and rear)... love them. For my AR-15 build I have a standard front, but will be installing the MBUS for the rear...

But there is another method to my madness for the rear on the AR... just not ready to reveal it yet.

I have a MATECH BUIS on my 22lr upper. Since that is also the rear sight I have on my PSA all things stay consistent during training.

Yeah, that's why I was leaning towards the ARMS polymer sight since I have the ARMS iron BUIS on my .223.

Fortunately though I don't need to buy one now because a kind soul from the other forum gave me a Magpul Gen 2 MBUS today and wouldn't take a penny for it.

even though I have no rear sight for you, i do have some suggestions.
1. check amazon or ebay, chances are, there can be some cheap MBUS sights that i have found for around $10-20 depending on color, it seems
2. check your local academy or any sporting goods store. chances are, you might be surprised how many sights, stocks, and even grips can be found (Even for academy, which is where i found a gen 2 MBUS rear sight for $56 sadly)
i hope this has helped somewhat, as I too was in the market for some good iron sights for my rifle, and i was very lucky to get a set of Gen 1 MBUS tan for around $10, and I have recently found a set of black for around the same price for 5.56/.223 easily.

MBUS is great, but it lacks something you mentioned in the original post -- a handle. Spikes Tactical makes a carry handle with rear sight that mounts onto a flat top. I have one currently mounted onto my dedicated .22lr build. Here's a pic of how it looks installed.

Btw, if anybody is wondering about the color difference between the upper and lower, at the time of the picture the lower had been treated with Froglube and the upper had not.

I wear no watch. Time has very little importance to me when I'm not in tactical mode.
