New player in gun control advocacy, pediatricians
#1
Quote:To pediatricians, gun control is a public health issue, not a political one. But they're treading a fine line, and they know it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has begun a renewed push to try to get Congress to pass gun control measures, sending more than 100 pediatricians to Capitol Hill earlier this month. But others who have taken on the issue over the past decade have a warning for them: they can run afoul of the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups that are quick to paint anyone who advocates for gun control as a political extremist.

What the doctors want is an assault weapon ban, mandatory background checks and waiting periods before all firearm purchases, a ban on high-capacity magazines, handgun regulations and requirements for safe firearm storage under federal law.

We actually changed pediatricians after the one we were going to completely missed that an accelerated heartbeat in a toddler is a primary symptom of a fever and he sent us to the ER instead of just recommending giving tylenol.

Funny. Someone named Fox writing for NBC.

How deceitful and typical of the left to try and trick low information voters. They keep using gun death statistics that include suicides. There are more suicides by gun than there are murders. And most suicides are by the over 75 group, so they use a stat called "potential years of life lost" to maximize the impact of deaths of younger people.

Pediatricians were the first to take up the questionnaire asking if guns were in the house, if they were properly stored, etc., there is absolutely nothing new in them being into advocacy. They were asking the questions 15+ years ago when my youngest was in diapers. The question always gets answered the same way, "none of your business", which is an answer in itself I guess.

I've had to tell my kids never to talk about guns in front of doctors or cops. Especially doctors. I just tell them doctors do not like guns. This doesn't surprise me at all.

We've instructed our kids to not talk about firearms to anyone.

I think most pediatricians just want to make sure that the child doesn't have easy access to the firearm. If they were REALLY concerned about child safety, they would demand that houses have electronics removed from the house because a kid is more likely to be hurt/killed by grabbing a power cord from an outlet and getting electrocuted when their little fingers touch the barely exposed metal while still in the receptacle.

You'd be amazed at how many times a kid can get shocked by standard household current and survive. I'm living proof of that.
