One of the more interesting design tweaks to come out of Russia in the last few years is the new Saiga-9 rifle, a 9mm version of the iconic AK-47 design. We’d only seen pre-production pictures of the gun before now, but as promised the rifle showed up at IWA this year and I was glad I was on the scene. So naturally, I grabbed it and fondled furiously. And you know what? I really like it . . .

There’s not a whole lot of information out about the gun yet, but it’s obviously an effort to produce a pistol caliber carbine that uses the same manual of arms and cleaning procedures as the main infantry rifle. They have a pistol caliber AK already (the Bizon) but it uses an odd circular magazine and so switching back and forth might be problematic.

Oh SHIT!

On the pafoa in the "What gun would you like to see made" thread I posted "A 9mm AK47 that isn't full auto and can be imported." (because I knew the Bizon exists, but it's FA)

I wonder if we'll ever see it?

What would be even better is a pistol version that you could slap an arm stabilizing brace onto!!!

I like it. But I like AK's, so...

While I'm definitely a fan of rifles that use pistol ammo, I do worry that having the same platform with variable calibers could cause problems. What those problems would be revolve around confusing parts, and in an emergency grabbing the right rifle and the wrong magazine.

Anyone else with one platform and multiple calibers have anything to say? Is that a founded or unfounded?

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Meh, it's cool and all but I'm more into pistols that shoot rifle rounds than rifles that shoot pistol rounds.

I could see mixing them up accidentally, but that can be solved in a variety of ways.

Right now I have to look at my AR muzzle brake to know for sure which upper it is - 22, or 223. The 22 has fake "slots" - they're just indents.

If I had two complete rifles though, they would be kept separately (as in not right next to each other) and would likely have at least one feature that readily identifies them.
