NFA paperwork for SBR
#1
My best friend's Dad is a judge. He is going to be retiring soon. I might ask him to sign off on my NFA paperwork. I own an AR-15. I want to replace the upper with an SBR upper. Which ATF forms do I need to fill out and submit? Thank you!

Bacon breaks the process down pretty well in this thread;

It is that thread that I credit with me successfully building my SBR.

You'll need a Form 1.

Justin

PS the links to the forms in that thread appear to be invalid now.

I would recommend doing an eform at this point. The ATF website is slow nearly to the point of being unusable but if you submit electronically you will save yourself months of waiting. Nearly everything in Bacon's thread still applies, rather than hand filling a form you do it via a website instead.

Also check the thread about LLCs in the NFA forum. I no longer advocate one method over another but I think anybody getting into the NFA game should research all approaches starting out.

Doing eforms speeds up the process?

It has been reported to significantly but like everything else the more people doing it the longer the times are dragging out. Earlier in the year people were reporting 90 day turnarounds on Forms 1 and 4. Dealers were getting Forms 2 and 3 in hours and days.

I just submitted my first a couple weeks ago so I have no personal experience other than it was a PITA dealing with the website.

Good to know, thanks!

Government websites are terrible. The VA site is absolutely disgusting.

Maybe Obamacare, ATF eforms and VA are all running on the same Commodore 64. They restart the eforms jsp stuff 4 times a day, it takes an hour to start up. Once its up it is barely usable for 30 minutes to an hour before it slows to a crawl and pages start timing out. Fortunately you can resume from whatever your last completed step was. It is absolutely painful, took me 2 days to submit a form 1, but my payment was instant via credit card and the form goes pending immediately.

I think you can only use eforms for a trust.

I believe you are correct, trust or corp but not individual.

I'm gonna have to update my tutorial with info about eforms soon. Until I do that, here are a few quick notes:

1. You can only use eforms if you are a dealer, or you are using a trust or corp (basically anything that doesn't require fingerprints/passport photos)
2. They seem to be a few months faster.
3. If there is a mistake on your form, it CANNOT be corrected and sent back. It gets rejected, and you need to do a new form and start at the end of the line.
