Police Fatally Shoot an Unarmed Driver on the Grand Central Parkway

Quote: Paul J. Browne, the department’s chief spokesman, initially said there were reports of movement inside the car, although he did not elaborate. Mr. Browne said a small power drill was found on the floor on the driver’s side, but he later appeared to play down the importance of that information.

“We looked for a weapon, we didn’t find any; we found a drill,” he said in a news briefing at Police Headquarters. “I’m not saying it played a role. I’m just saying we looked for a weapon. We did not find a weapon. The only thing we found was that drill.”

Why is this in National Gun Crime you may ask? To me, it would seem a crime was indeed committed. Murder is what I'm seeing. An officer shot and killed a man for no reason other than there may have been movement inside the car, and he potentially saw a power drill.

But I'm sure the NYPD will be happy to put the guy on paid leave until they can find a way to sweep this under the rug as well.

Quote:officers appeared irate

Quote:one of the officers stuck up his middle finger and was screaming obscenities from one of the moving police trucks.

Quote:The officers in the trucks had just executed a search warrant in the Bronx and were on their way to Brooklyn to execute another warrant, the police said.

Sounds like thy were still hyped up from the first warrant. Clear case of road rage.

So now they're allowed to gun us down for no reason? I thought we were only allowed to be gunned down in cold blood for merely possessing a firearm, or 'lunging' at the police with any type of weapon including ball-point pens?

Huh confused

Hey, if cops will shoot a man in a wheel chair that's missing 2 limbs for "brandishing" a pen, how can anything surprise you?

The details of this are amazing.

One of the occupants of the car was a NYPD cop, suspended for shoplifting!

Oh...and the murdered man is a US Army reservist.

Cops are completely and utterly out of control.

A little more info on the events. Now remember, these guys (NYPD) are supposed to be "highly trained". Bunch of Keystone Cops if you ask me:

Oh, and the murderer did cost the city $450,000 for two lawsuits by civilians for his past behavior. Why was he still on the street?

Quote:Hamdy is no stranger to allegations of poor police work. In both 2001 and 2008, the city shelled out more than $225,000 to people who claim Hamdy and other cops he's associated with for violating their rights.

Quote: Polanco, 22, of LeFrak City, was killed early Thursday after he was pulled over by cops on the Grand Central Parkway near LaGuardia Airport. He was driving co-worker Diane DeFerrari and an off-duty NYPD officer, Vanessa Rodriguez, home at the time.

The officer who filed the fatal shot was identified by sources as Det. Hassan Handy, a veteran cop who had never before fired his Glock pistol in the line of duty.

Police contend Polanco was driving erratically and refused to stop when two unmarked Emergency Service Unit vehicles began chasing him.

They said once officers pulled Polanco over and approached his Honda Fit, they told everybody to put up their hands.

DeFerrari told The News that cops killed her pal in an act of “pure road rage” because he cut them off in traffic.

“Noel didn’t have a chance to put his hands up,” said DeFerrari, a mother of three. “They screamed, ‘Put your hands up!’ and shot at the same time. “

“It was simultaneous. There was a pop and Noel gasped.”

A power drill was found in the car, but no weapons.

Police say Polanco and Rodriguez had been drinking cognac before the 5:20 a.m. shooting.

DeFerrari, 36, insisted she was sober because she had two drunken-driving arrests on her record. She said she was sitting in the passenger seat beside Polanco and had no problem identifying Hamdy as the shooter.

Rodriguez, 29, was in the back seat and police said she was awakened by the gunshots. But sources said Rodriguez was waving her police ID out the window just before the shooting.

Rodriguez has a checkered history with the NYPD. She was stripped of her gun and badge after she was busted for shoplifting a sweater from an H&M store in June.

A little more:
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscar...ting_o.php
Quote:It is “unknown” if Polanco moved after Hamdy, 39, yelled, “Show me your hands!” to the three people in the car — one of them a sleeping off-duty cop in the back seat— on the Grand Central Parkway near La Guardia Airport at 5:15 a.m. today, Browne said.

The woman in the front seat, a bartender named Diane DeFerrari, “said she complied with the cop’s direction to raise her hands,” Browne said.

“The last thing she saw was [Polanco’s] hands on the steering wheel,” Browne added.

No weapon was found in the car. An electric drill was found on the driver’s-side floor.

“The matter is under investigation,” said a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

DeFerrari, in a blistering statement tonight outside the Astoria nightclub where she worked with Polanco, accused the cops of killing him in “an act of road rage . . . because my friend cut off the police” without knowing they were NYPD officers.

“The police proceeded to try to chase us, sticking their middle finger at us and screaming obscenities at the car trying to pull us over and veered us into the divider of the left lane of the Grand Central Parkway,” DeFerrari said.

“To pull you over and ask for your license and registration is one thing,” she said.

But DeFerrari, 36, said the cops jumped “out of a vehicle rifles drawn and [said] simultaneously ‘Put your hands up,”and I hear a pop which came in through my driver’s side window.”

“They could have hit me,” she said. “I’m a mother of three.”

“My friend – the only movement that was in the car when they say that they saw movement was when his hands were on the wheels and he shifted them down because he knew he was going to go to jail. At no point did he think he was going to be shot and killed.”

And then they had us with our hands on the vehicle telling us your friend shot himself. I looked at the police officer,” she said. “I was in utter shock. I couldn’t at any time argue with them because these were the guys who shot my friend and there was no one else there to protect me. I didn’t know what they were going to do to me.”

The deceased reservist.

And how did he die from a single gut shot in just 1 hour? That is most unusual, isn't it?

If he was hit in the liver he could easily bleed out in under an hour. The hospital giving him blood was probably why he lasted that long.

Do any of you remember the Sean Bell shooting? In that case Bell had no gun in the car but he brushed a cop's leg with his car and collided with a police van when he accelerated.

This one is even worse because they found no gun, the car was stationary and the deceased made no attempt to assault or hurt the officers.

And why does a police department keep on an officer that's costing the city budget and taxpayers $450,000 for prior civil rights violations? Is it the police unions protecting their members? The bureaucrats in NYC should be bringing heat down on the NYPD nonstop to have the guy fired when he costs the city that much money. In the least he is a financial liability.
