Obama: Americans voted for tax hikes on rich

Quote: Claiming a mandate from his election romp over Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama announced Friday that he had invited Congressional leaders to the White House next week for talks on how to steer the battered economy away from a "fiscal cliff." Obama said he was open to compromise with Republicans—but that any final deal needed to raise taxes on the richest Americans.

"This was a central question during the election," the president said in brief remarks in the East Room of the White House. "It was debated over and over again, and on Tuesday night we found out that a majority of Americans agree with my approach.

"Our job now is to get a majority in congress to reflect the will of the American people," Obama said. "I'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. I'm open to compromise. I'm open to new ideas. I'm committed to solving our fiscal challenges. But I refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced."

The president, who did not take questions on Friday, campaigned in part on a plan that would extend most of the Bush-era tax cuts, but allow them to expire for individuals making more than $200,000 or families pulling in $250,000. Republicans have said they want to prolong all of those rate reductions.

The rest of the story is here, talk about clueless. He didn't even win by the margin that Bush did in 2004.

If that isn't enough, Romney's 57,208,649 votes is 95.5% of the 59,903,905 votes that big O got. In comparison Kerry, with 59,028,109 votes got 95.1% of Bush's 62,028,285. That means that he has less of a mandate than Bush had during his toughest election cycle.

Oh boy, yet another reason for the job creators to run right out and start hiring. Rolleyes This guy is either determined to destroy the country or clueless enough to think that he's helping it by punishing the producers in favor of the looters. Still not sure which.

But he still won. And to a degree many did vote to 'tax the rich' even if they really don't understand what that means. Like most slogans it sounds good. Reality on the other hand is a bitch.

It isn't any kind of mandate by a long shot though. Regan had a mandate, this is no mandate.

True. But these are just words that are meaningless that I don't take all that seriously. O still needs to deal with the House. At this point they really have no option other than coming to some sort of agreement which neither side will love.

However by using the "m" word he is positioning himself in the minds of the sheeple as being the one who has the power. The fact that he doesn't is only relevant to those of us who are paying attention to the numbers. To the idiots his word is gospel.

But all power is to some degree an illusion. And at this point the sheep, um American voters, are out of it till the next election. O and the House will sit down, huff and puff and then finally work something out. Like it or not the tide of history is on their side for now. It will move back to our side but we lost and they won. As they say, elections matter. Winners always get more of their way than the losers.

The voters are out of it only if he doesn't convince them that the Republicans are standing in the way of the progress required by his mandate. Remember, there is another election in two years, if he can paint the Republicans as just being a wall and not working for the betterment of the sheeple the House could go back to the Dems, then we'd get 2 years of his getting everything and anything that he wanted. ETA: There would also be no worries for his since he won't be able to run again. He can lie and lie and lie and there will be little in the way of repercussions.

Yeah, but I have much more faith into his country than do many here. Not saying you, just others. At some point pragmatism will rule the day. As far as I'm concerned the silly slogans spewed here are about as stupid as those coming from the other side.

Before this past election, Dave, I would have been 100% on board with you. Having seen how the idiots voted to re-elect Mr. Something_for_nothing_but_your_free_will though, just color me pessimistic.
