PRINCETON, NJ -- President Barack Obama averaged 49.1% job approval during his first term in office, among the lowest for post-World War II presidents. Only Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford had lower job approval averages. Obama's first-term average is most similar to Bill Clinton's. Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy, and Dwight Eisenhower were the most popular first-term presidents.

It also looks like Obama has the lowest approval for the start of a second term since before Eisenhower. Bush was at 52% Obama about 47-51%.

To be fair, Gerald Ford wasn't elected to either the office president or even vice president. He got to the White House because of resignations. First VP Spiro Agnew then Richard Nixon.

Do you mean to be fair to Ford?

He was so low because of the Nixon pardon, huge inflation and a big recession. Also Vietnam still had a bad taste. He deserved a low approval even though he was essentially appointed to the presidency and only served a little over 2 years.

Obama has no such excuses.

To paraphrase Dennis Green, "He is who we thought he was.

What I mean is that he was thrown into a job he wasn't prepared for because of crappy circumstances. I think he did a decent job keeping things from falling apart for his short time in office. Could he have done better? Sure. But he could have done a lot worse.
