Obama's CDC gun violence investigation results are in. Some good news!

These findings don't seem to be slanted to fit an agenda. It is interesting information that I encourage both sides of the debate to read. Hopefully it spurs serious discussion about measures that would actually help some of these problems without showy distractions about scary looking rifles.

"Earlier this year, President Obama ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the existing research on gun violence and recommend future studies. That report, prepared by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, is now complete."

1. The United States has an indisputable gun violence problem
2. Most indices of crime and gun violence are getting better, not worse.
3. We have 300 million firearms, but only 100 million are handguns
4. Handguns are the problem
5. Mass shootings aren’t the problem.
6. Gun suicide is a bigger killer than gun homicide.
7. Guns are used for self-defense often and effectively.
8. Carrying guns for self-defense is an arms race.
9. Denying guns to people under restraining orders saves lives.
10. It isn’t true that most gun acquisitions by criminals can be blamed on a few bad dealers.

Read the article for specifics, and more detail. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and...rom_a.html

I'm really surprised he let the findings be released, since they seem entirely inconsistent with most of the grabbers' arguments.

#1 is an opinion not supported by the facts.

#2 indicates it might not be a problem.
#3 If we have a gun violence problem, then we have a much bigger car violence problem. There are more guns than cars yet more people die in auto related deaths. Cars are built for safety guns are built to kill but cars still win. Also, from #4 if handguns are the problem, they make up only 1/3 of firearms.

From #6 more people purposely kill themselves than are murdered. That's not a problem, its a solution for the person taking his life. Most of these deaths are males 75+ years old. They will find another way if a gun is not available.

If you take away suicides, justifiable use, and police killings you are left with a much smaller number of gun deaths that would not rise to the level of being called a "problem". Add to that that most gun deaths are perpetrated by and on African Americans, you realize that this is a cultural and racial problem, not a gun problem.

Here is the source report. I started reading it and will finish it this week.

I saw the above article on the Miami Herald's website earlier. I went back to look for it later but could not find it, maybe my googlefu hit a hitch. I am going to print out a hard copy of the report just the same.

I think this will be a big deal over the next couple of years and will become an oft cited resource for both sides. Ironically I think it may well benefit our side more.

There are quite a few things in the report that we can point to and basically say "see, even Obama's own report says such and such......."

Conversely when antis cite parts we can always point out "sure it says that but think of the bias in the report, I mean we all know Obama has an anti gun agenda, surely that put some pressure on the researchers to reach certain conclusions".

Can't wait to read the rest of it and unlike healthcare I don't have to wait until something is passed to read it. Wink Still a lot of reading and digesting, but this may turn into something Obama regrets.
Everytime we look the other way when someone else loses rights we disagree with, we make it easier to lose the rights we support.
