Obama to cite income gap in economic speech

Okay, seriously. Between healthcare and this BS, it just screams socialism.

Quote:Obama to cite income gap in economic speech

President Barack Obama wants to draw attention to the income gap between rich and poor in an economic address meant to both spur short-term congressional action and help set the agenda for the remainder of his presidency.

The White House says Obama in a speech Wednesday will renew his call for increasing the minimum wage, arguing that growing income inequality and stagnant wages threaten upward mobility and retirement security. Polls show the economy remains the single biggest concern for Americans, despite recent focus on problems with the health care law.

I don't give a hoot if they raise minimum wage really. The issue is moot if its done slow enough because minimum wage always levels to the same point and just spurs general wage increases which cause inflation which means those in debt owe relatively less. if they do it too quickly everyone loses jobs overnight and the pain will cause more issues long term for the idiots that actually believe is solves anything. Nothing will bridge the health care insurance gap, insurance premiums will just increase incrementally. Bring on the inflation, bring it on in an order of magnitude. add two 00s and I'd be thrilled. Only those with savings and retirement funds in excess of their debt will be screwed and they don't seem to care enough to make a unified front or they are too stupid to know the pain they are about to experience. since about 15 to 20% of the nation voted for this nonsense while 14 to 19% voted for another joker that supported this type of nonsense and about 60% were smart enough to know that voting for either of the two idiots we had to pick from would make zero difference anyway we get what we deserve. Either we all start voting for the right people that don't buy this type of crap or we get what we deserve. We are reaping what we have sowed. I'm hoping my gamble on increasing my debt my purchasing a home pays off tomorrow. raise the minimum wage to $20 or so please..

Regardless, people are not poor because others are rich. Its not a zero sum game.

There is a serious problem in the US with the very top level earners taking such a large piece of the pie and continually grabbing more yet not truly earning it.
Perhaps it's time for the blue collar class to stand up and say you want those pipes fixed, well mr exec your bill will have a 200% surcharge or you want that town car's front end well pay the surcharge.

Football players make millions but have short careers and have to generate ticket sales. When ticket sales drop or end well then owners must decide.(Stadiums shouldn't be built by taxpayers)
The flip side is how can the CEO of a hospital justify 22 million a year? He's not a neurosurgeon doing ground breaking research.

There is something wrong here and I don't think socialism will fix it but it needs some kind of shake-up.

CEO's are paid based upon the recommendations of a board of directors, and generally (not always) salary is based upon a percentage of the profits and amount of business they generate.

Hospitals are definitely a business.

The CEO might not be doing the research (although they likely were experts in their field at one time, or extremely savvy) they manage the hospital in a way to attract those neurosurgeons doing ground breaking research.

I don't know why they need to pay/earn 22 mil a year--if I got that in a 1 year salary I'd only work for one year and my family and I would be financially set for life. As would most people I know.

Even still, I'm of the opinion that higher salary attracts higher quality people. There is a HUGE gap between the janitor and a hospital or a kitchen worker and the CEO, but there is also a huge gap between them and a doctor. The reason is the very specialized nature of the work. CEOs--good ones--are highly specialized in a lot of areas and operate almost in an omniscient kind of way, and (generally) have a talent in finding other talent.

Look at it this way--Obama isn't a terrible president just because he sucks, but because he's filled his administration with people who suck just as bad if not worse because he wants to make himself look good. If he picked quality people capable of doing the job, he would have made even retard Joe Biden look awesome.

CEOs have a knack for sitting at their desk in a fashionably palatial office with super model secretaries dreaming about what pile in their money bin they'll roll around with them in, because they not only find superior level performers to run the operations but also have the ability to manage/motivate them to enact their vision.

Are some people grossly underpaid? Yes, absolutely--and I think that the companies (especially fast food) SHOULD pay more. But that decision is up to them, not the government. The working conditions are not abusive.

I agree that government isn't the answer and I'm not a union person. Sadly this situation isn't fueled by the desire to excel and generate more revenue for all but by greed at all costs.
Take a large manufacturing business that has a single location. The CEO may make a million, sales reps 100K, production workers 30K and the janitor 20K. The only one the place can operate without is the CEO.
No sales it folds.
No production it folds
No janitors and the shitters back up and they all go home
Who is most valuable?

This is partly the reason for unions but then you have a whole other set of problems.
