Obamaphone
#1
So in church we have a small bus ministry and I teach a class with several really sweet black kids/teens. Love them. Anyway....so one girl was showing that she had her Obamaphone with her. I was like, oh really? Lemme see...so they showed me. And then they went on talking among themselves and were joking about what if there was a "RomneyPhone" and stuff. But anyway they were like so proud "Yep, it was free."

And I could not help but think that we have no hope against a party that gives at least 51% of the country "free stuff".

Its also sad that people will sell their vote for a free phone.

And sad that these dear kids have no clue, and possibly have no chance to have a better life in the future. And I can't exactly talk politics with them, because that's not what my job is....so I just shake my head and hope they'll wise up someday.

The problem is (and I would like to first state I am not trying to stereotype or place everybody into one category), but the culture that a lot of those kids come from believes that government entitlements are an accepted part of life. Because welfare, food stamps, etc. are so common and prevalent in their society, they don't think twice about receiving anything from the government. If anything, it might seem weird for some of them to not receive any form of government help. They see other people, specifically white people, as being born with "entitlements" too, however these "entitlements" are coming from their parents/family and from society in general. That's why when the government gives them something, they don't feel too bad for it. (It's easier for me to explain this in person than type it out. I deal with a lot of people on government programs on an everyday basis.)

Oh, I totally agree....but its just sad because its almost impossible to reverse that way of thinking.

Do you want to look up how obamaphone is incorrectly applied, or should I do it for you?

I already know...but it doesn't matter, because "perception is reality" and if these kids think Obama gave them a phone, then basically, Obama gave them a phone. *shrug*

And you, as the adult, didn't correct them. I blame you. Shrug.

Its not my job to teach politics to kids in church...their parents send them to learn about the Bible, not why the President is a loser.

Shrug back. Tongue

It has nothing to do at all with who is president, or votes. You let them walk away believing that the phone was free because of Obama, which simply isn't true. You could have told then that, because it has nothing to do with politics, it's just facts.

They were originally ReaganPhones. Because the Lifeline program which gets funded from the tax on your telephone bill has been funding this since 1984.

If you look on your cell phone bill, internet bill, or any other bill that has voice communications on it you should see "Universal Service Fund" charges on it. That's where the money is collected--you've been paying this (for all of you younger than 45 years of age) all your life since you've had a phone bill.

It's just recently that they've switched over to mobile service instead of offering subsidized landline telephone service. The switch to mobile happened when GWB was still president--but only for the last 2 weeks of his 2nd term.

So technically "Obamaphone" should apply to the mobile phones, 'Reaganphones' to POTS phones.

I have hated that USF charge ever since it started appearing on phone bills. There's no government program that pays for Air Jordans but I see kids who come out of PHA scattered site housing with $250 sneakers and I can recognize the sneaks straight away because shoe advertising is pretty heavy down here. I've been in Finish Line and seen the ridiculously priced stuff. I don't wear expensive sneaks because, well... do you wanna be robbed for your shoes? I wonder how kids age 11-15 who don't have a job and are living in PHA property found the funds for that stuff.

Maybe that resourcefulness can come in handy by cutting off USF? When their phones go dead I'm sure they can get them hooked back up. The ones who make slightly too much money and can't get on Lifeline have to go to Cricket, MetroPCS and BOOSTmobile and use pay-as-you-go kiosks. Seems like a good strategy to me.

The Universal Service Fund should be cut off. Let churches and non-profits run their own phone programs for low-income and the homeless. Oh that's right, many of them already DO THIS and don't use USF to do it.

It wouldn't matter what you told them. You'd be a racist for dissing the Savior.

I believe we are too far gone at this point to correct anybody's thinking as regards BHO. Sad

It's like trying to get out of the way of a bad train wreck.
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.
