Officers shoot suspect in movie theater
SAN DIEGO — Police shot a man who was possibly armed with a gun in a Carmel Mountain movie theater Saturday.

The shooting occurred during a screening of “Les Miserables” at Reading Cinemas Carmel Mountain 12 on Carmel Mountain Road about 3:50 p.m.

The suspect with a handgun had been chasing his girlfriend in the nearby Best Buy parking lot before running into the lot near the theater, authorities told Steve Krongard, who owns Nickel City arcade next door.

Krongard said police blocked off the parking lot before several officers rushed into the theaters with assault rifles. Later, a stretcher was brought into the theater.

Paramedics transported one shooting victim from the scene, said a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher.

Police evacuated witnesses from the theater. No other injuries were reported.

The suspect’s girlfriend was reportedly safe in a neighboring business.

Adrian Amante, the longtime owner of Home Trends, said officers came into his store with guns drawn about 2:30 p.m. saying they were searching for a man, but didn’t say why.

The officers swarmed the parking lot and stopped all cars, checking back seats and asking drivers to pop their trunks, said Amante’s sister, Christina.

The officers searched the area with dogs while a police helicopter assisted overhead.

After about an hour and a half, Amante said people started running out of the theater and hiding behind cars.

Nick Anastasopoulos, who owns Athens Market, was told by witnesses who sought refuge in his business that police had calmly told them to evacuate during a methodical search of the theaters. He said officers turned up the house lights in the theaters during their search.

Police were interviewing people who were in the theater in a neighboring carpet store, said a woman who answered the phone at Contract Carpet. The moviegoers were told at some point to get on the ground, she reported.

No other details were immediately available.
