OK, Really, What’s Going on with .22 Rimfire?

The issues behind lack of .22 Long Rifle ammunition on the shelves of your local retailer are complex and not easily explainable. Demand currently exceeds supply. Beyond the laws of simple economics, there are side effects due to lack of said supply and high demand. The two most obvious are speculation and hoarding. If you can hit the local big box store because you have the time to wait for the ammo truck to arrive and resell $20 worth of .22 for $60 through the Valley Trader or at the next gun show, you are an opportunistic speculator. There are some other words I might use, but I will restrain myself. And if you are a guy that typically buys .22 Long Rifle 250 rounds at a time who just bought 10,000 because you could not find 250 when you wanted them, then you are a hoarder. It does not make you evil, it simply means your buying habits changed due to market or external conditions. And your changed behavior likely led others to change theirs as well.

When demand exceeds supply, feeding more product into distribution is the obvious answer. It’s just good business. But what if you can’t? That’s where we are with .22 Long Rifle. http://www.americanrifleman.org/blogs/ke...22Rimfire2

I saw over 160 one hundred rd boxes of CCI round nose standard velocity 22LR in Wmart yesterday. ($7.47)

It seems many stores got in shipments recently (Saturday), but most have sold out already.

My local Wal-Mart got a shipment in sometime Saturday. By Sunday morning it was all gone. Fortunately, I was there early enough Sunday morning to get 3 boxes. I should have enough to get through the matches I plan on shooting yet this year, and will hopefully find more (at reasonable prices) before matches start up next year.

That same store that I mentioned on Monday still had nearly 100 boxes on Thursday. I was shocked to see it still there.
(But not too shocked to buy more)

Another store that I looked at on Monday had none and tonight when the Mrs and I were back there to get some groceries I walked over and they had 30 boxes of it. I assume that Wmart must have made a huge purchase of this particular ammo because I'm seeing reports of it appearing all over, yet no other kinds of .22LR to be found at all.

I'm buying it while I can. I don't really have the money, but I'll find something to cut back on to make up for it - like food. Wink

The only good news is that now we know who is to blame! Wink

Have any of you guys been watching Gunbot? I have been, regularly. For a short period there seemed to be a fair supply of CCI Blazer 40 gr High vel. available. And at less than $0.10 per rd. Now there is none.

CCI Mini Mag is still high priced and so is the standard velocity stuff.

I lucked into some CCI Mini-Mags at Shyda's in Lebanon a few weeks back. The price was what I consider high at 11.67 per 100 but it's been so long since I've seen any 22LR that I paid it anyhow. Prior to that, the last time I scored some was when the new Cabela's in DE opened back in May.
Ammunition, it's the new lead bullion. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

I'm not having any issues finding 22 ammo in gun shops. Walmart is still dry.

I bought 6 bulk packs of Federal Automatch today. Gonna have some fun tomorrow!

This is insane. There are hundreds, if not thousands of bricks of .22lr on gunbroker, but almost nothing in local stores or ammo vendors online. Today I called 6 different gun stores and also my local walmart. I landed one brick of RGB at Dick's (which was extremely lucky) and everywhere else was dry. Quinby's had ZERO 22 ammo. Target World was so low they were selling partial boxes in zip-lock bags. The guy at Walmart said they got a few boxes last week, but before that they went a month without getting any.

Online vendors look the same. The only thing you can find is random off-brand stuff in 50 round boxes.

Yet gunbroker has a seemly endless supply of BULK 22 (and I'm talking 6 or more bricks per auction), at triple the cost of what it should be. I can only conclude that people who work at gun stores are buying it before putting it on the shelves, and then listing it on gunbroker.

I'm convinced that there is no real shortage in supply, it's just a bunch of lowlife motherfuckers that are trying to make some easy money, and it's working. I don't know how we can fix this, but I hope this is just a phase that will eventually pass.

We really are our own worst enemy.
