Organizing your information
#1
I'm sure if you guys are like me, you have a lot of information about your family that you need to keep organized. Something that I've been working with for the past year or so believe it or not is WordPress. I have an installation of it running on my CentOS server, it isn't accessible from the outside world, but we use it all the time.

Using the Advanced Iframe plugin, I'm able to embed my video surveillance stream into the front page. Also on that page is a calendar widget of upcoming events, birthdays and such.

I have a database for recipes that I come up with and things that the kids like to have as their favorite meals. There's a database of local links, like to my HomeSeer Home Automation site, links to all the infrastructure management sites, like all my Access points, router, cable modem, video server and things.

Using a Contact plugin we can keep track of friend's and family contact information, business and billing accounts, school contacts and doctor's offices.

I also have lists of how my scanner is programmed, since the scanner in the house isn't alpha-numeric, I created a table that shows all the channels, frequencies and what's on that frequency. Including in that information is the full list of PD's and their direct phone numbers as well as the same for the FD's.

There's also a link to our electronic documentation library that has about 32G's of documents on all kinds of subjects. Then we have the normal stuff that many people have on their public blogs, photo albums, various videos and such.

So far this system has been working very well for us, since we have multiple machines in the house, it's created a centralized location for our information. Not saying this would work for everyone though, but for those IT inclined folks, it might be something you want to look into.

This is my main portal for our information services at our house.

I'm aware that the surveillance is blurry, that's intentional.

I use iFrames alot in this so that I can link websites from other devices and services on my local LAN into the portal. It was great finding the iFrame Widget lastnight so I can embed my hacked X10 control panel into the main page. The controls that are show there are for exterior lights. I also added in a Speak box, so I can kind of have a text to speech intercom between the computers.

So what happens if the grid goes down? Are you SOL at that point or?

All the information there is hosted locally on a pair of servers in my basement that I can run off my generator. Much of the "survival" documentation can be copied to SDcards and used in our tablet which can be recharged via solar.

In my quest to continue to consolidate information into my portal, I got my weather station sending data to it today. I have to register the software yet, but this does indeed work.

I also found a nice Tab plugin for Wordpress so that I can quickly access the information that I look for most often right from the main page. I found that the menu is just a little slow at processing requests. This plugin preloads all the pages under the tabs so they're accessible immediately.

You better not post any naked pictures of yourself here. You'll be the first banned MOD. Tongue

Added some new features in the past couple of days. Been looking for a way to keep a home inventory for a while. I played with this software a couple months ago late one night and didn't get it to work. Got it working today. Like much OpenSource software, the instructions weren't quite complete on how to make it work, so a little messing around, reading error messages I was able to get everything in place.

It's embedded in an Iframe of my portal.

I also got tired of the live radar in ForeCastFox not working properly. Sometimes it updates, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't then you need to either close FF or open a new window. Apparently the author is no longer working on it, so I decided to embed the local radar in my portal.

I wrote a little script that's run by crontab that does a wget every 18 minutes for the exact file I need, it dowloads that image to my webserver, chown's and removes the old image. Then there's a page embedded in an iframe that refreshes itself every 90 seconds.

My weather station is now working properly as well.
