Our (hopefully) new home - beginning of a more self reliant life
Well here goes.

Wife and I spent a full week house hunting through out the state of Iowa.

Our "price range" and "property size wants" forced us to look at mostly early 1900's farms. We inspected about 20 houses in the 1 week period in all areas of the state.

We were looking at homes on line with features that would give us redundancies - "back ups" if you will in case of a catastrophic failure on the part of the grid, gov't, etc.

They all had positives and negatives. We had to choose what had the most positives in our price range - that also gave us the most "existing" redundant systems. We can then add what else we want over the few years following the purchase.

1 - We wanted to find a place with both a well and a cistern. We failed BUT the home we put in a bid on (will hear back by this Monday) has the following: Rural water (aka city water for country folk), Well water for outside use (Not hooked into the house......yet), a pond and a hot tub. These options offer us many redundancies for water.

2 - Wanted a place with multiple heating options - preferably one that did not require the grid to operate. We succeeded with this want. The home has a propane forced air furnace AND a wood stove with NO attached blower AND a propane heater. There is about a 1 acre stand of trees on the 6.4 acre homestead.

3 - There is an existing chicken coop which only needs minor repairs, a large (currently a horse) barn in excellent shape with a metal roof, a separate large shop and another small building (probably only large enough for storage).

4 - Great open areas for planting a fruit tree grove, a good sized garden, an herb garden, etc.

5 - Will need to add more wind break trees and shrubs. Some already exist.

6 - There is an existing space for MIL but also a large attached garage which could be turned into a bigger, more private space for her. That is our plan. I grew up with "grandpap" in the house and believe it is our duty as children to take care of the generations that came before us!

7 - NO root cellar....yet Smile

8 - GREAT (walkout) basement for storage, tornado cowering, canning area, etc.

9 - GREAT south facing windows for passive winter solar heating. The hot tub room has these and that room will be a great winter herb room.

10 - Many of the 2nd floor windows open onto a roof which would allow for easy escape if needed.

11 - AWESOME sunny reading spaces in the house Smile

12 - Gas (propane) stove as well as hook-ups in the basement for a summer kitchen!

13 - and probably a lot more goodies I can not remember.

This property has good groundwork for what we want to build upon. Our goal is to have solar/wind installed within a couple years. So many desires to make it perfect for us - perfect for "WHAT IF".

I don't usually experience too much envy, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have any right now. Big Grin

We do have a second choice in mind but this one is by far the best equipped from the start. Monday will be the day.

This will be a few of the longest days of our lives.

Congrats, Publican! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. One day I'll have my "country home".

Best of luck with your plans. I wish you the best of luck. I am also envious. Maybe someday I can convince the wife to do something similar.
das, proud to be a member of since Sep 2012.
Can I be rude and ask how much? Only because you're looking for what the wife and I want, and Iowa appeals to us as does any lowmpopulation rural area Smile

Nice! My wife would love a place like that! (So would I for that matter!)
A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."
