PA may reduce property taxes

Quote: School property taxes cost Pennsylvania homeowners billions of dollars each year, but some lawmakers hope a few simple pennies will be enough to finally erase the controversial levy from the books.
Two dozen Republican and Democratic lawmakers unveiled legislation Tuesday to replace the $10.4 billion collected every year in school property taxes with new revenue generated by increases in sales and personal income taxes.
Pennsylvania has been unsuccessfully waging the property tax debate for decades. If legislation being proposed in the House and Senate is approved, the sales tax would rise from 6 cents on a dollar to 7 cents. The personal income tax would go from 3.07 cents for every dollar earned to 4.34 cents.

Even though, unfortunately, we do not own a home...I think this would be very fair, because it would spread school taxes over everyone instead of just homeowners.

Even though I personally pay for my own kids' school, so technically this plan would "hurt" my pocketbook more than before...I still feel it is fair and am for it. And if we do buy a home, it would be nice to have those exorbitant property taxes reduced some.

First day on planet earth? Tax increases always get passed but somehow the tax reductions never seem to offset the increase.

This legislation would eliminate the school property tax. The bills are HB76, SB76. There is information here.

There is a spreadsheet link at the lower right of the page that will calculate the effect this will have on your personal situation if you enter your data.

The overhaul of the school funding system is long overdue. Let's hope this is fast tracked.

I read about this in the local paper today. At first glance I think I would like to see it pass, though I'm still waiting to hear that there is something evil hidden deep within. I would gladly give up writing that extra yearly check that keeps getting higher and higher while the resale value of my property is seemingly getting lower and lower (not that they pay attention to that). A percentage increase to the income tax I can at least somewhat mitigate with business expenses.

Property tax is the single largest barrier to personal liberty, and unconstitutional, IMO.

Just like the proceeds from the casinos would be strictly for property tax relief... until they politicians decided they needed it for other things... and it keeps going down and down and down.... Cant wait to see how long this last before they find another way to jack up the other taxes now...

Oh great. Cant wait to actually pay more when the people who have children collect welfare and pay less

Man up, accept the responibility for your own children and pay for your own fucking kids to go to school.

The last I knew it was easy to deduct property taxes from income tax! Nearly impossible to make a deduction in sales tax worth it.

I am not excited about the increases but felt it was more fair than just making homeowners pay..... Property tax around here is like a whole second mortgage.
