PA to Form a Task Force on the Prevention of Violence
#1
I just got this letter from Chuck McIlhinney, PA Senator from Bucks and Montgomery counties. It looks like the state is gearing up to form a Task Force on the Prevention of Violence. While that sounds like a warm and fuzzy thing it also sounds like it could be the beginning of the state coming up with their own new laws.

I suggest staying in contact with your State Reps as much as possible. I would also include the governor.

Thank you for contacting me regarding recent incidents in gun violence. It is difficult to put into words the shock and sorrow we all feel for the families affected by the most recent event that took place in Newtown, Connecticut. I truly feel for these families and want to make sure that such a tragic event does not happen again.

The issue of gun violence and particularly violence in schools is a multi-faceted issue. In response, we need to step back and analyze the entire situation and make decisions that will prevent similar incidents in the future. Passing gun control laws is not the only solution in stopping these types of tragedies from taking place and ironically, Connecticut has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation. We need to take a closer look at some of the common themes that are present in these cases such as mental illness. We need to review Pennsylvania’s mental health laws and access to treatment to better identify and help individuals who commit these horrifying acts. And we also need to study and develop measures to increase safety in our schools. As the father of two school aged children, I feel we need to do more to protect our children.

Over the next several months, the legislature will be studying which policies should be implemented to improve public safety. Several legislative proposals are being introduced including a Resolution to form a Task Force on the Prevention of Violence.

I therefore value your input on this issue and I thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate hearing from you and I will keep your thoughts in mind as the legislature begins its study and debate on this issue.

Sincerely,

Senator Chuck McIlhinney
10th Senatorial District
Bucks and Montgomery Counties

Double edged sword. Got to keep a close eye on this.
The law? The law is a human institution...
