Possible Forum Down Time Tonight
#1
Just a heads up that we may have some down time around midnight tonight! We are upgrading the PHP software on the server which will make the site faster and more stable. We are running on a much older version right now!

Remember to visit the Facebook page in case anything happens to go south!

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

If you're moving up to a new enough version that will allow you to enable opcache things should really fly.

Looks like everything went pretty smooth! Forum seems quick also! Hopefully this fixes our stability issues! Let me know if there are any random errors or oddities!

Enjoy!

Between my phone and my laptop I never really had any issues with speed or odd behavior, just the occasional downtime. If this keeps us up and running more reliably that will be awesome.

I just got opcache installed on my server here at home, looking to see if it improves performance or not.

Where you are really going to see a difference is in CPU and disk IO usage per request and how many concurrent requests you can serve. It really worked wonders for me on a few sites even coming from using APC which more or less does the same thing just not as well.

What you will have to do though is keep an eye on your opcache stats and make sure you aren't blowing through the allocated memory for the cache. Since you're running more than one forum I would say there is a good chance the default values will not allocate enough for you to keep everything cached properly. It will take some trial and error.

Set yourself up a simple php page that calls phpinfo
PHP Code:
<?php
echo phpinfo();
?>

Look at the opcache section and look at cache hits vs misses, compare cached keys to max keys etc. Your misses should stop once everything gets cached, if they keep going up indefinitely you've hit your max and keys are getting replaced.
