Pre-packaged food - where to start?
#1
Just looking for some advice on pre-packaged food (MREs, Mountain Home, etc.) In beginning a stockpile, what's the best way to start?

Are there preferred brands/types?

Thanks.

If you are going with "camping" type meals, Mountain House was identified as having the best flavor and shelf life by a major magazine not too long ago. I believe it was Backpacker that ran the test.

MREs have very high calorie counts to help one endure the rigors of field duty or combat. Also are long rumored to "bind you up" so you don't have to "go" as often. Don't know much about the civilian products, but might be a better bet unless you need to gain some weight.

I bought bulk MT House on line.

When I start to buy more, I will do what I did the first time around - BUY SINGLES AND TASTE TEST them for yourselfTongue

You and your family will be eating them...make sure you like them at least

I have several Mountain House packages around the house. They definitely taste much better than MRE's. Each package says it feed two (ususally). I pick one up every time I walk by them. Haven't gotten one yet, that I thought sucked.

Gander Mt. had them bundled together for a while and on sale, I snapped up a bunch then.

Wonder if we could do a Group Buy on them. Say buy a case or two, and then spread them out to everyone that wanted in on the buy. Shouldn't cost much to mail them out to everyone since they barely weigh anything.

I'll see what I can find out.

Interested in a group buy -- I would like to stock up on some emergency rations.

OK, heard back from Mountain House. They don't offer bulk buy discounts. They did send me a link to a sight that sells there stuff and is having a pretty good deal on their stuff right now.

My question is, what are you stockpiling for?

Just want to make sure I have enough food on hand for my family should we ever be cut off (ice storm, major snow) for any length of time.

And then there is always the Zombacolypse. Ninja

Thanks - I will give some of that a try.

@Streaker69: My objective is the same as mtbkski -- preparing for a situation where we are at home and it is either unwise or not possible to leave for a short period of time. This isn't for a hidden bolt-hole in the country.

At least, not yet. :-)
