"Privilege"- The new liberal buzzword.
#1
We all know about how the liberal MSM loves to try to remove the stigma from hot button issues by using buzzwords like "guest worker" instead of illegal alien and "entitlements" instead of welfare (lets leave soc sec and unemployment out for the time being though) or using "tolerance" to preach the ideal of embracing one new social notion while becoming completely intolerant of the old one. I've noticed the word "privilege" spreading like wildfire lately in the American vernacular, not only on TV, but in the past few months I've heard it spoken in public on several occasions. They way I've heard it being used is also not just in reference to race as in "white privilege", but also in reference to economic status. Today I heard someone say something about their "upper middle class privilege" complaining about the woes of their lifestyle jokingly. Stuff like this raises the hair on the back of my neck. To me it shows how society is shifting in that if you're poor it's because the man is keeping them down and everyone else is there because they've been given their station in life. It seems like this concept of privilege is being used to further degrade the ideals of working hard and becoming a "self made man" (oh shit, now I'm a sexist too! Sorry!). When I was young most people with power or status were shown to me as role models to pattern ones' life after in order to become successful. Now it seems that it has become acceptable to mock people who have become successful under their own power. Obviously this is nothing new, but I find this recent uptick in the use of "privilege" I've been hearing indicative of the shifting perception of ideals and success in this country. Every time I hear it now it is becoming clear that the masses are starting to believe that they are nothing without the state and everything that they have is due to the infinite benevolence of our dear leader president Obama. Every time I hear someone talk about it now all I hear is their chains rattling as they trash their own notions of freedom and independence.

Has anyone else noticed this concept of privilege becoming a household word/phrase or am I just picking up patterns amongst the static again?

It's old news the left plays games with the lexicon. What you're pointing out is another example of the left playing with their own poop.

Another troubling aspect to priviledge is the temptation to displace other words, like "earned" or "right", or inalienable.

I'm just going to leave this here...This is exactly what I was talking about previously.

Quote:Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American

Quote:This has been most obvious in the context of recent mass shootings. In those awful episodes, a religious or ethnic minority group lacking such privilege would likely be collectively slandered and/or targeted with surveillance or profiling (or worse) if some of its individuals comprised most of the mass shooters. However, white male privilege means white men are not collectively denigrated/targeted for those shootings — even though most come at the hands of white dudes.

Imagine the firestorm if this was on the Drudge Report and instead of blaming "white dudes" they replaced "white dudes" that with Jews or Blacks, or some other minority. That person would be fired overnight.

What if some journalist were a conservative member of a major media outlet on the scale of salon said...

"Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is an African American"

"Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is an illegal alien"

"Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a Muslim"

...for a headline. Think he would be looking for a new job tomorrow? Once again the racist liberal double standard rear's its ugly head again!

"privilege" is also the republican buzz word. Like that driving is a "privilege" nonsense when in-fact it is at the least a statutory right if you're an owner of a car and over 18 and meet the statute.

it's a buzzword, yes, but it's something that the left has been able to transform into votes.

what's the easiest way to get someone to agree with you, in most instances? pull out the emotional card and bring up a topic and/or a discussion from an emotional point of view. politics went from being a logical and rational discussion to fear and emotion. that transformation, imho, is what allows the scummiest of politicians to rise to the top and become president or very influential within their ranks.

honestly, I think this is a problem for both the left and the right: the left will start an argument based on emotions and then the right will reply back with fear.

Agree! Plus, fear is the most powerful emotion.

Agree! Plus, fear is the most powerful emotion.

If that were true, wouldn't the right then be winning all of the various and sundry arguments going on? Not to mention silly things like elections.

no, for exactly the reasons I mentioned above: politics has shifted from rational and logical discussions to emotion and fear. the left and right have BOTH become experts in framing their arguments in the latter fashion.

from being an observer, I tend to believe the left almost always uses emotion to drum up votes and the right uses fear to drum up votes.

examples;

Left wing arguments:
The rich should pay more in taxes since they make enough already
The common good is far superior to individuality
Capitalism is unjust and unfair, we should abolish capitalism and allow for more central planning

Right wing arguments:
They hate us for our freedoms
We should build very large fences and walls to keep the brown people from taking over America
Allowing gays to marry will destroy traditional marriage

at the end of the day, the worse type of laws are almost ALWAYS based on fear and emotion rather than rationality, logic & human nature.
