PSA PA-10

Ok, grabbed a lower and build kit for this platform the other day. Everything arrived in a week. Now I had been keeping up with some of the issues that people have been experiencing with this rifle, since it came out.

Some issues were that people figured that an AR in 308 should be just like every mil spec AR build. Well it doesn't work that way. People soon figured out what the word 'proprietary' means. Now, some issues also arose from a lack of R&D on PSAs end. Buffers were wrong, springs were incorrect, etc... A YouTube search will reveal a bunch of stuff.

Anyway, it appeared that PSA had worked the majority of bugs out of the system, thanks to the experienced shooting public, and the price was right. I only ran into two issue with the rifle, during the build. I kept track of any issues I came across during the build.

First thing was that the profile of the bolt hold open kept it from actually engaging the bolt. It appeared that the lever was contacting the lower and not rising high enough to catch the bolt. A quick reprofiling and that was corrected. It was harder to punch out the pin because of the wider mag well than to actually correct the profile.

Second, and this to me was a bigger problem, was that the extractor wasn't moving. When I first got the upper, the bolt had lots of brass on its face and a few shavings around the extractor. I had read that some were a bit "gritty" and just needed to be worked out. Well I couldn't tell if mine was gritty because it didn't actually move. It wouldn't close the bolt on the dummy rounds most of the time.

I took the bolt apart, to check for any machining issues. Everything was fine. Only problem I could see was that the extractor spring was too tall and was restricting the movement of the extractor itself. Dropped in a new extractor spring and everything functioned perfectly. The bolt closes smoothly and the cartridge rims have two little extractor marks on them, just like my 5.56 guns have.

Going to the range today to test functioning and basic accuracy.

Range report:

Gun ran great with Magpul mags. I had issues with the ASC mags. Trigger work and handloads or match ammo will really tighten up the groups. Average 1.25"-1.75" @ 100/ .75" or better @ 50 with LC ammo. I didn't bring any handloads because they are chamber specific for the bolt gun. New rings haven't shown up yet, so el crappo rings were thrown on for the testing. This should easily drop down to a 1 MOA or better rifle and I may float the barrel.

I shoot lefty and there were no gas issues what-so-ever. I had heard that this gun is over-gassed. Not in this case. Recoil was noticeable, but not violent like the PTR used to be. Brass ejected around 2 o'clock and had no dents or dings. Looked no different than what comes out of the bolt gun.

All-in-all I am pretty pleased with the rifle.

SR25/LR308 rifles are great and fun to shoot but like you said, proprietary is the work of the day when it's least convenient.

ASC mags seem to be hit or miss with the platform. They either work or they don't. I'm lucky enough that they do for me. Good thing too since the stock mag is an ASC. I do like the loading and operation of the Magpul mags better though.

Just put in an ALG ACT trigger set with JP yellow springs. Trigger pull is now 2.5lb down from 4.5lbs of grittiness. Much nicer than the PSA enhanced trigger set.

Stock AR triggers are hit or miss. Some are great and some are horrible when it comes to grittiness. The same with trigger pull. Some aren't bad but they aren't a Geisselie or Timny.
