Public School Does Something Horrible When Marine Dad Objects to Daughter’s Mandatory Islam Assignment
2014-10-31_15-47-21

When a Marine Corps veteran objected to a mandatory Islam assignment that was given to his daughter, he was banned from the school. http://liberty247.net/daughters-mandator...om-school/

She needs to do the assignment, and he needs to let go of his religious bigotry.

Comparative religions as well as philosophy is taught in public schools. World history (of which Islam is as a part) also is taught.

It is not among parents' privileges to pick and choose which assignments their children will and will not complete based on their personal tastes.

I like how they say "marine veteran" as if that should give him some special status or privileges in this case.

What it does is to inadvertently point to the source of his bigotry. Perhaps some treatment for combat-related mental problems is in order before he does further harm to his children. Just another reason why we need the VA to get its act together.

I would be curious to see if they also had to write a paper about Jesus. The news article does not give enough information to let us know if the Islam paper, which seems to be a pretty indepth study into the religious tenets, was just one of many assorted studies, or if it was a big project specifically on Islam.

So the article, to me, does not qualify or disqualify the dad's problem with this. There may be a good reason he was upset...or maybe not. I do hope the course included indepth study on several other religions, then, as well...Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness--along with the Islamic project.

From all indications, it isn't a comparative religion class. I can see valid reasons for having an assignment only on Islam, such as when you are studying a region where Islam is the predominant religion. You cannot study an area without studying the worldview of the people there. This is consistent with not being able to study the US's history without studying the beliefs of its founders. The basic tenet of anthropology, sociology, and history is that nothing happens in a vacuum. If you want kids to be able to be critical thinkers, you can't just feed them what you want them to know and nothing else. You must do it all in context.

Yeah but I think they are phasing out some of the beliefs of the founders in modern history texts.....I'm almost positive they would not send home a three page paper on the Quakers or on the religions during the Great Awakening.
