"Reasonable" price for .223?
#1
I'm looking to pick up some .223 ammo in the near future. I know that supplies are tight right now, and prices may be up a bit since the Sandy Hook mess and impending threats of new gun control.

This will be my first purchase of this caliber, so I don't have any baseline to refer to, to know what average prices have been. What have you paid for basic FMJ target ammo in the last six months or so?

Brass, or steel?

Wolf steel sells(sold) for around $4.50/$5.79/20 rds depending on where you get it.

Brass is(was) around $7.99/$9.99/20 rds
(maybe less if purchased by the case?)

Last year I paid $310 for 1000 rounds of 55gr FMJ. Six months ago I purchased 420 rounds of green tip penetrators for $149.

Most likely brass.

Looking at around 200 rounds for the first purchase, but might buy as much as 500 rounds if there is a decent additional savings.

Reasonably priced ammo is an oxymoron right now. You will be lucky to find .556 in 55 and 62 grain copper. I have seen some of the heavier stuff around . 69 and 75 grain but its even more expensive.

I understand the effect that current events are having on the market. I understand that I will be paying a higher price that was common six months ago, and that's fine. I just want to know the relative difference I'm seeing, which I why I asked for input from those who have made previous purchases.

To put current prices into perspective, Cheaper than dirt was selling 1000 rounds of Lake city 5.56 55gr for $999.... thats right $1 per round.... and people will pay it! you have little options right now i tried to find ammo as well and all the major sites are completely out...

I won't buy from them, even at .01 per round.
