Recommend An Affordable Decent 308 Please.

Im torn between getting a 5.5" 44mag Redhawk or a entry level 308. The 44 would see more range time but I would also like to give Hog hunting a try. I am drawn towards the Savage and the Ruger American. I need some good advice. Thank you.

Funny guy Gixxer. NOT affordable and probably frowned upon for hunting.

When I was sighting in my Mossberg MVP Patrol, I got it down to a 3/8" group at 100 yards. Not bad for a rifle with only a 16" barrel. I think I paid $600 for it. It will take AR-10, LR308, SR25, and M-14 magazines. I find the LR308/SR25 mags seem to run best. Especially Magpul. You can find magazines from 5 rounds up to 25 rounds (if you want to lug around all that extra weight). The stock magazine holds 10. One benefit the stock mag has over the other mags is that it allows the bolt to be closed when empty. With the others, you would have to drop the mag to close the bolt and reinsert the magazine.

Mossberg has several variations of the MVP to chose from if the Patrol isn't your style.

You are welcome.

I feel it's fair to mention I got that grouping using Remington Premier 168gr BTHP Match ammunition. I haven't tried any hunting loads, so I don't know how much accuracy would be lost. Match ammunition isn't exactly the best hunting load.

On a gun forum I ask for advice on a firearm and get 1 real response. Great site!

Sorry, don't own a .308. I'll try harder next time.

Not directed at you Gixxer. Just disappointed in the lack of response. Now we know why people dont stay very long.
