recommend new forum privacy protocols

the forum is currently open to view without registration and being indexed by search engines. I recommend to tptb that they disable bots, make the forums readable to registered users, hide members list, and implement new registration moderation considering the current political climate, this would be a basic step to help protect the members here.

how do we stop other sites from linking to our threads that'll then get indexed?

There should be a setting in the Admin panel to prevent the site from being indexed without being logged in. At least there should be.

I am all for this.
This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. -Ben Franklin

Lock this place up. Local car forum I was on was nice and tight.

requiring registration to view threads will kill hotlinking. also, install a stats package like aws so you can see your referring traffic. then, you can find the poster and politely ask them to remove the link.

it can be done with a robots.txt file, but there are ways around it if someone REALLY wanted to index the site.

I'm sorry, but this just sounds extremely stupid if we want the site to survive and get larger. how many sites are large and busy without getting indexed by google or yahoo or bing? do you think, for example, that pafoa got big and popular without indexing? facebook? myspace? youtube? what's the purpose of denying indexing of political site that doesn't really do activism as a site?

I'll admit that i found pafoa through google. having a wealth of information getting indexed high on google's rankings is a great way to grow membershipbase and advertising revenue. otoh, this is sensitive time with respect to gun politics. maybe only make the think tank and lounge private? all the technical firearm discussion will continue to get indexed and bring in traffic.

I would posit that each member should be responsible enough not to put things on here that need protecting... I proudly own all of my opinions; but one has to be cognizant that everything you put in writing is "out there" forever! No forum countermeasures are going to undo that reality.
