Rep. Chaka Fattah Guilty on ALL Charges
Quote:U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (D., Pa.) was convicted Tuesday in a federal racketeering case likely to send him to prison.

Fattah convicted of federal corruption charges
The verdict - announced by a jury of nine women and three men - comes after a four-week trial in which prosecutors alleged that Fattah took bribes and repeatedly stole charitable donations, campaign contributions and federal grant money under his control.

It marks an ignominious end to the career of one of the region's longest-serving members of Congress. Fattah lost his bid for reelection to a 12th term to State Rep. Dwight Evans in April's Democratic primary, just weeks before the trial began.

The jury convicted Fattah of all charges. Sentencing was set for Oct. 4.

"It's a tough day," Fattah said as he left the federal courthouse the verdict. "I do want to thank the jurors."

He declined to say whether he would resign from Congress, saying he wanted to consult with his lawyers.

Prosecutors lauded the jury's decision.

Fattah "betrayed the public trust and undermined our faith in government," said U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeher. "Today's verdict makes clear that the citizens of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania expect their public officials to act with honesty and integrity, and to not sell their office for personal gain."

In addition to racketeering conspiracy, Fattah was found guilty of bribery, bank fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, making false statements to a financial institution, and falsification of records.

It's difficult for politicians to grasp the notion that they have been found guilty of corruption when they see their fellow politicians operate as such on a regular basis.

Difference is, Fattah is actually guilty. Budd was framed.
