Rep. Marcia Fudge cites karaoke skills in seeking leniency for ex-Rep. Jesse Jackson
#1
It must be a requirement any more to be a complete moron in order to run as a democrat. WASHINGTON -- Warrensville Heights Democratic Rep. Marcia Fudge wants a federal judge to consider Jesse Jackson Jr.'s karaoke skills -- as well as his career in public service -- when the former congressman is sentenced for improperly using $750,000 in campaign cash for personal purposes.

In a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Wilkins that was entered into Jackson's court file this week, Fudge describes Jackson as "highly intelligent," as well as "charming" and "entertaining."

"When things got tough or extremely difficult on the House floor, we could count on Jesse to bring levity to an otherwise daunting situation with a bad joke or a one man skit," Fudge's letter says. "Jesse was the highlight of our karaoke nights and always made everyone feel like an integral part of, and not apart from, various activities. He made us realize that we could still have fun, while addressing important national issues."

The letter Fudge wrote as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus also cites Jackson's work as a "tireless advocate for the poor and underserved" and his efforts to redevelop decaying neighborhoods and ensure health care access.

"Jesse is worth saving and I know he can continue to have a positive impact on the lives of others as he has with my colleagues and me," her letter concludes.

Fudge's letter to the judge was written on letterhead that spelled her first name as "Marica" instead of Marcia. Fudge spokeswoman Belinda Prinz said her office has since corrected the error and "that batch of stationery is no longer in use."

Earlier this year, Jackson admitted misusing his campaign money to buy meals, multiple flat-screen TVs, and appliances for his house in the District of Columbia. He faces nearly four years in prison when he's sentenced in July.

Fudge isn't the only Cleveland-area politician who is close to Jackson. Former Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich visited Jackson at the Mayo Clinic last year when he was being treated for depression. So far, there are no letters from Kucinich in Jackson's court file. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2013/05/...raoke.html

Karaoke And The Criminal Justice System We Deserve

Quote:Jackson, a deeply flawed and troubled man, resigned and pleaded guilty to a federal crime for misuse of campaign funds. It's frankly ridiculous he was reelected, and he clearly doesn't belong in Congress, and by his own admissions he abused his position and broke the law, and must face the consequences.

But now he's facing the federal criminal justice system, and his lawyers are trying to show the judge the whole story of who Jesse Jackson Jr. is. They've presented evidence of his family life, his work in Congress, his mental problems, his whole life. They've submitted letters from people who know and like him talking about dozens of topics.

What topic gets play?

A single colleague — Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) — mentioned that he was an enthusiastic participant at karaoke nights. She did so in passing in the context of praising his life and work. Suddenly, though, that silly detail is the story: the media is framing it as "defense seeks lower sentence for karaoke."
I am not a lawyer.
