Can you legally take a dead buck from the side of the road?

No. I asked the same question to a WCO once, and that was the answer I got. You can call them and ask them, and they may isuue you some sort of permit to do it; people call all the time about it, and they're generally cool about it, from what I understand. Too lazy to sit in a treestand, huh?

We had a deer hit just down the street from us and it ended up in the neighbors yard. Cop showed up and had to put the deer down. A guy who had stopped asked if he could take the deer (he had been unemployed for a while and he was hoping to bring it home for dinner) the cop said he had to call the Game Commission and they'd get him a tag for it. With roadkill, I think the tag is just to prove you didn't shoot it illegally.

I'm a ground man myselfBig Grin A friend of mine found one and took it home. Another friend said as long as you call the game commission and pay the "per antler" charge and tag fee you can keep it. Antler feeShrug

See how times change? When I grew up in Florida, there were chain gangs that'd clear the roads of dead stuff...armadillos, gators, and so on. When the chain gang days were over, you'd be doing a public service by picking the dead critters up yourself...I had a biology teacher in HS who'd pick up dead stuff - cats, etc. for us to dissect.

Now, you gotta PAY for dead animals you scraped up off of the road? Holy cow.

(Yeah, I know the law...still, pretty damn dumb, I say.)

I heard they get like 40.00 a deer or more. I counted 20 dead dear on 422 from valley forge to reading (on the westbound side) just going to a job...$800.00 one way? I'm doing something wrong...Shrug

Leave it to the government to capitalize on any situation. Remember, these are the same people that came up with the 'death tax'.
