Ron Paul hates the UN so much, he appeals to them for help...

Libertarian folk hero and retired Rep. Ron Paul is fighting to take the domain name RonPaul.com from a legion of loyal supporters. And he's turning to an unlikely source for help, filing a complaint with an agency of the United Nations -- a body he's criticized for years.

........

The owners also are bristling over Paul filing the complaint with a U.N. agency, which many libertarians mistrust. Plus they dispute Paul's argument that they tried to sell him the website for $848,000.

The owners say they offered up RonPaul.org for free after hearing Paul say last month he regretted that he did not own the site.

and?

I like Ron Paul a lot but this annoys me to no end.

someone else already owns the domain ronpaul.com so he either needs to pony up and pay what they're asking or move on.

the people actually offered to give Ron the ronpaul.org domain for free.

You shouldn't be able to own a known persons name.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to.

And he's not the only Ron Paul in the world. I'm sure they'd be willing to sell it to *any* Ron Paul that wished to pony up the cash. And they clearly aren't "cybersquatting" since they were using it to promote the cause.

This is like Nissan (car company) suing Nissan (computer company) because they claim they are more "Nissan" than the lesser-known Nissan.

If you're running for higher office, rule #1: Buy up all the domain names that resemble your name.

agreed.

imagine a John Smith name being registered....there's probably millions of John Smith's in the world.

I'm pretty sure Ron Paul had absolutely no interest in his domain name back in 2007 before he started his campaign so someone picked it up and advanced his ideas a great bit.

I also believe (this is from memory right now), that the ronpaul.com site has accumulated something like 250K users in their mailing list which is very large and probably worth some coin.

edited to note that their mailing list has 170K users, not 250K.

If you asked one of his rabid followers, the answer would be "yes"

that's a bit of a stretch there.
