Self Defense Suggestions NJ/NY (Including NYC)
#1
Hey guys, I'm looking for any suggestions regarding self defense "tools" if you will, that will at a minimum fly under the radar, or would be considered legal in NJ and NY.

My employment requires me to work quite a bit in both NJ and NY upstate and in NYC. I avoid going to either place as much as I can. Lately I've been lucky and worked mostly from home, but there are several projects on the horizon and I'll be over into the land of "YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT!"

I've been here on the east coast for over a year now, and honestly hadn't thought much about it. I moved here from CA and was use to fairly tight restrictions, but here (meaning many of our neighboring states) it is absolutely ridiculous. For one in CA, I legally kept firearms locked in the trunk of my car without a permit to carry. There were no rules about having to be on your way to or from a shooting activity, range, hunting, gun store etc... Didn't do me any any good for SD I know, but I kept a pistol with me as backup as part of my GHB, in a SHTF situation. F*** carry laws if all hell has broken loose, I wanted to get home alive.

I also have for many years carried a Spyderco folder clipped to my pocket without a thought. It seems the law on that, especially in NJ is a gray area and depends on what LEO you might happen to run into and what time of the month it is for him/her. I spent a lot of time last year up in Manhattan, and kept the knife on me, but kept in concealed. In CA you had to have it visible if on your person, concealed was a felony, which from what I read on NYC law visible was unlawful, but concealed was not. I think in NJ a knife needs to be visible as well, and carried for lawful purpose yada, yada, yada. I could be wrong on that, but anyways, I digress...

I'm not so much asking for info on what is legal and not legal as far as firearms, knives etc... More or less I'm looking for suggestions on simple, perhaps everyday tools / devices one could have on their person and ready to deploy for SD if such a need were to arise. I'm thinking more along the lines of things that an LE wouldn't even bat an eye at, like flashlights, etc... I know there are a lot of options out there, but was wondering what you guys here have owned or maybe carried as part of your EDC that works for you. I'd like to go for non-lethal, but also the ability to incapacitate if it got to that level.

You wouldn't be able to run as many people over with that car if it didn't drive as far. It should only have a 10 gallon fuel tank.

Stun guns (tasers) are illegal in both states. Knife laws are too vague in both states.

NJ Pepper Spray
Quote:Chemical Sprays:
2C:39-6i Any non-felon 18 or over may possess for the purpose of self-defense “one pocket-sized device which contains and releases not more than three-quarters of an ounce of chemical substance not ordinarily capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury, but rather is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air”.

NY Pepper Spray
Quote:Section 265.25 (14) and (15) The possession of “self-defense sprays” by persons who are not felons or who have been convicted of an assault, 18 or over for the protection of person or property and its otherwise lawful use is legal. “Self-defense spray” is defined as “a pocket sized spray device which contains and releases a chemical or organic substance which is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air or any like device containing tear gas, pepper spray or similar disabling agent”. There are certain labeling requirements. Sales require both a seller’s license and the completion by a purchaser of a registration form. New York residents may only purchase defense sprays from licensed Firearms Dealers or licensed Pharmacists in that state. No more than two sprays may be sold at any one time to a single purchaser.

The best way to defend yourself in those states is to not go into them.

When I'm in a situation where the penalty for getting caught carrying are prohibitive (like at work) I carry pepper spray. Actually, mine is a Sabre product that contains OC and CS. The OC (pepper spray) is quick-acting, and the CS (tear gas) is the gift that keeps on giving...

Yeah... but do I get one with a handcuff key so I can escape the cops (assuming I carry it up my bum daily)... or one with a whistle and fire starter? Tongue

Youe bes are small impact weapons, like yawara/koppo sticks. They're simply just solid rods of wood, plastic, or aluminum, that you can strike vital areas with. Tactical pens, as was mentioned, are just koppo sticks you can write with. When I used to go to NYC to hang out, I would carry a mini Maglite with a paracord loop on it as a weapon, along with a couple of knives and a leather coin wallet.

I've been looking into pepper spray. I'll check out the Sabre products. I love the smell of CS.

Thanks. I do have a good flashlight that can double as an impact weapon, but I may actually grab a tac pen too. That seems like a good bet. In crowded places like NYC, I would expect a confrontation to be very close quartered and require some quick defensive strikes.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I just picked up two new canisters of Sabre yesterday. Pretty much every item on the display was touting "3-in-1", and contains infrared dye in addition to the OC and CS.
