Sen. Toomey supports military strike against Syria

Pat Toomey is onboard with President Barack Obama's call for military action in Syria.

"I think there is great danger if we do nothing," the Republican senator said during a stop at Prospect Diner in Columbia.

The conservative lawmaker on Wednesday agreed to back a no-boots-on-the-ground strike against the Syrian government in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack.

Toomey said a no vote in Congress would hurt America's credibility around the world.

He still has "a lot of questions" about what the U.S.-led intervention will look like, but said he is pushing for a response that threatens President Bashar al-Assad's grip on power.

The Obama administration has been building a case this week in Washington after announcing the president would seek authorization from Congress before launching a military strike.

Toomey said he will speak with senior military officials Friday before making a final decision whether he will support a resolution approving military actions.

Unlike many Libertarian-leaning Republicans who do not favor military action, Toomey said the use of chemical weapons escalates the need to get involved.

"Chemical and biological weapons fall into a unique category because of the scale in which they kill people indiscriminately," he said. "If we don't act now, what kind of message does that send to Iran and North Korea?"

With Toomey's announcement in support of the strike against Syria, he joins his Pennsylvania colleague from across the aisle. Sen. Bob Casey has said it's in the best interest of the U.S. to respond.

A vote is likely to be taken in the Senate and House next week, when Congress returns from summer recess.

Lancaster County's representatives said they will wait until they have more details before making a decision.

"Launching missiles and dropping bombs is an act of war that needs careful consideration," Republican Congressman Joe Pitts said Wednesday in a statement. "There are many potential problems with taking military action and questions about whether it is possible to punish the regime without harming innocents."

Congressman Pat Meehan said he is reluctant to support a resolution without a clear strategy from the administration.

"Sending our men and women into combat is the most grave decision a public official can make, and so far I'm not satisfied that this administration has sufficiently answered these questions to the Congress and the American people," the Republican said Wednesday in an email.

In addition to gaining support from legislators on Capitol Hill, two national polls show Obama faces an uphill battle with the public.

Nearly six in 10 Americans are opposed to using military action as a response to the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released Tuesday. A Pew Research Center poll, also released Tuesday afternoon, found that 48 percent are against military strikes while 29 percent say they are in favor.

Toomey said getting domestic and international approval will be important going forward.

Between this and his gun control attempt, I bet he'll be a one term senator.

Toomey and Casey are tools for Obama.... we have seen that these "Republicans" from across the country are moving more and more to the Democratic way of thinking and the only way to stop it is to get their butts OUT of Congress....

Only problem there is that we have no real good options for replacements at this time...
You want to take my guns away ???? SCREW YOU ............
How could anyone who voted for Toomey vote for him again? He betrayed the gun rights community by taking a leadership role in gun control legislation earlier this year. Now he joins many Democrat hawks who want to see military action against a Syrian regime that is fighting radical Islamic and Al Qaeda rebels. What will he change his mind on next? What's the next insane plan he'll back Mr. Obama on?

Can we please get a decent candidate for Senate from PA? There has to be a Libertarian that'll step up.

The Tea Party movement needs to not give up. The Dems are communists....the Reps are Dems....and the Tea party is more like Reagan Reps.

I would prefer Tea Party over Libertarian in general, although I'm probably a fiscal Libertarian.
Error 396: Signature cannot be found.
Given the variety of U.S military involvements, or campaigns, of the last 2 decades, I find it hard to believe that more questions need to be asked, falsely assuming that there is something original here that has not been considered over the past 2 decades. Sad

Really? Tea Party over Liberty?

The Reagan era is pretty much the beginning of the Neo-Con era.

Pat Buchanan calls neoconservatism "a globalist, interventionist, open borders ideology." The paleoconservatives argue that the "neocons" are illegitimate interlopers in the conservative movement.

Sound/Look familiar?
We should not forget that the spark which ignited the American Revolution was caused by the British attempt to confiscate the firearms of the colonists. - Patrick Henry
