Slug Gun Range Day at Scotia 100-200yds and Deer!
#1
What an awesome day for sighting in a new set up I made! If you've read the thread about setting up my Mossberg for big game you'll know this is all new to me. I managed to get my hands on some 2-3/4" SST's and finally had the chance to let some heavy duty lead fly.

I decided to check out the Scotia range for shooting rather than risk spooking the wildlife that have been hanging out around the homestead. I will do most of my hunting here at home and with seeing deer here for the first time in a long time I want to give myself the best chance of seeing one once the season opens. If I shot here on a regular basis I don't think it would be much of a big deal (see pics below as proof!) and also I haven't made a good bench rest to shoot from yet. First off let me tell you what, the Scotia range is absolutely AMAZING. Unlike the range up pine creek that I used to go to you actually see the PGC dollars being put to good use. If you haven't been there I highly recommend it. They provide movable target stands that insert into pipes placed at 25-50-100-200 yards which are clearly marked and they even have sandbags made from old shot bags. Clean public restrooms, loads of pamphlets and information about wildlife and hunting/trapping in the main building, probably a dozen different ranges all over the property and very clean. I was impressed!

Well, let's get down to business. After making sure I was hitting paper at 25 I set up at 50 and sighted in my Nikon Slughunter scope. Next I set my target out at 100 to see how it grouped. After a few tweaks I was able to get a four shot group within 3" at 100.

Next I stretched the legs out on the ol'girl and tried my hand at 200. With the sights positioned on the 200yd mark in the scope I put two shots just over the target with one hitting brown. The last shot I took I aimed the 175yd mark at the bullseye and shot just low of the paper. I didn't take any more shots. I figure if I split the difference on the BDC crosshairs I can get it damn close. I figured the 200yd mark would be a little high because the scope is designed for bullets traveling 1,900fps and hornady advertises these SST's as traveling 2,000fps.

All in all I am very happy with the results. No crosswinds today but with my eyes and resulting sore shoulder I am pleased with how this gun/ammo/scope combo groups. Shocked actually!

Oh, and we had some moving targets today too Big Grin
